Title: Tip for vigilance theme
Post by: Danielkix on July 30, 2012, 11:42:13 PM
So I'm back from my birds of paradise themed tourney and next week is vigilance, all creature cards have it. Any tips of what deck would benefit from that?

Cards that have {T} ability. So you can attack then {T} for pwnage.

Play {Royal Assasin}. 😜

No dont.

Myr and {Tempered Steel} or {Grand Archetect}. Attack AND mana accel.
Elves
Spiders/tree folk. {Doran, the Siege Tower}. Everyone's going to be swinging. Have creatures that have "big butts" so they can block and swing too.

{Blinkmoth Nexus}, {Assembly Worker}, {Mishra's Factory}

I would play a flyer deck. Flying/vigilance is just mean.

{Oderic, Master tactition} would be great there too, since you can swing with all, and still block.

{stuffy doll} or turbo fog seem good when most players will be creature focused.

Make a Solar Flare deck, stack up on {Sun Titan} and burn them to death.

{ Builder's Blessing} works well too

I would be a jerk and run this, and nothing but {Gideon's Lawkeeper}s, {Blinding Mage}s, {Blinding Souleater}s, {Vectis Dominators}...with {Gideon's Avenger} and {Sun Titan} to attack, and just to spite Jester, {Royal Assassin} ;)

XD

When surrounded by those dudes, RA works alot better (although jank all by himself in this format.  Well.... if lots of people are trying to use {T} abilities...)

GftT is 3000x better than {Murder}, that extra Black Mana hurts dude... We don't even get to keep {Doom Blade}! Are you kidding me??? Blahhh! I really dislike {Murder}...

No doubt, if they are requiring {B}{B} in the casting cost.....they should have left it there at 2 CMC.  Making it {1}{B}{B} really makes it sucky.

The closest we've had to that would be {Devour in Shadow} and {Victim of Night}.  I think as we move into RtR and away from INN, Victim will become more viable since Vampire and Zombie decks will likely decline.  But to make a simple:
{Kill} {B}{B}
Instant
Destroy target creature.

would be equivalent to {Counterspell} vs {Cancel}.  {Cancel} is fair, but not sexy.  But it has no backlash, no opt-out, not restrictions.  To do that, you have up the cost.  Raising the power level of certain areas if fine in Magic, it should vary over time, but giving too much power to control elements shifts towards unfun, not more fun.

Conditional kill-spells at least force players to consider the meta and adjust accordingly.  Lots of people playing {B}?  Swap out your {Doom Blades} for {Go for the Throat}s.  Everyone you know plays Humans?  Toss in {Victim of Night}s and {Human Frailty}.  Give a format {Kill}, and it's an auto-include.  You wouldn't even think about it.  Auto-includes are boring.
