Title: Standard Limitations
Post by: tsul25 on July 30, 2012, 06:40:15 PM
I am a new player with a limited collection trying to make a standard deck. This is what I have come up with so far. I would appreciate suggestions as to how to improve my deck and what cards I should acquire, but please keep them within the last block because I don't want to buy something just to have it rotate out.

9 {Forest}
7 {Mountain}
4 {Rootbound Crag}

Creatures (23)

3 {Arbor Elf}
2 {Borderland Ranger}

4 {Elvish Visionary}
2 {Goblin Arsonist}

I've tweaked it a little. My main concerns are whether or not the {Goblin Arsonist}'s are useful. I like having red one drops, and I like that they can take out a x/2 or two x/1's, but I'm not sure if I can justify them to the same extent as another {Arbor Elf} to help with acceleration. Also, I am debating whether or not to add two {Prey Upon}'s. I think they would be useful with taking out bothersome creatures, especially with the deathtouch on {Deadly Recluse}. And while I'm on the subject of deathtouch, I originally had two {Ambush Viper}'s but took them out so I could add another {Elvish Visionary} for increased card advantage. I chose the recluses over the vipers because I thought reach was more valuable than flash, but I'd love to hear an opinion on that.

I'm actually still waiting for about 12 cards to come in the mail, but so far I'd say my problems are that I tend to use up my whole hand rather quickly, and that I don't have a way to wipe the board if my opponent ends up with massive creature advantage. I understand that {Bonfire of the Damned} would be perfect for that, but that card alone costs as much as the rest of my deck so I will not be purchasing it. Also, I don't have a definite win condition. I'm not sure if that's a big deal though because I do have lots of ways to win. I can burn them to death, accelerate into a {Primordial Hydra} and finish it a couple turns later, pair a silverheart and go in for the kill, or even take control of one or two of my opponents creatures.

True. I didn't consider my deck good enough for standard so I posted it in casual lol.

I like the card you suggested, I'm just not sure where it would fit in. My first thought was going two for two with the goblin arsonists, but that would mean moving even further towards green which is already the dominant color.
