Title: Can I save my spider?
Post by: tsul25 on July 30, 2012, 01:42:17 AM
I have {Sentinel Spider} on the battlefield. My opponent casts {Wrack with Madness}, causing my spider to deal 4 damage to itself. Upon resolution of Wrack with Madness, can I cast {Joint Assault} (or any other buff spell) to keep my spider from dying?

No, the buff happens first, making him a 6/6 then he deals 6 to himself still killing him.

Your spider would be dead upon resolution, you don't have a chance to respond to the damage done, the spell resolves and damage is done at the same time.

Either you cast the buff in response to WwM, in which case Elitehalo360 is right, or you wait until after WwM resolves.  By then the spider dies before you can buff, as Bleakone said.

Confirmed.

Okay, but What if, for some reason, wrack with madness could be cast at instant speed. If I played joint assault first, and then he responded with wrack with madness, would the spider live in that case because both spells were already on the stack?

No becaus the "instant speed" wrack resolves first killing the spider leaving joint assume with no legal target

Oh well. I don't really like spiders anyways.

There is no time between the spider taking damage and it dying where you can save it.  Sorry.

This topic name makes me think the next un- set needs:

{Shoe} {3}
Artifact
{T}: Shoe deals 1,000,000 damage to target spider.

Sorry, way off topic, but I had to share what the topic name makes me think every time I read it.
