Title: Proxies
Post by: BlackJester on July 28, 2012, 11:58:16 PM
Who uses them?  Who likes them?  Who hates them?  Thoughts?

Stumbled on the convo in a Decklist, so I animated it and gave it a life here.

Ah Proxies, brings me back to the days of the MTGSalvation forums debacle. The "Make a Proxy thread" last time I saw it it was over 500 pages. 1.6 million views. And thousands of user created proxies. The images were spectacular!!! Half really, some were junk (probably just not my style). Anyway, eventually, due to copyright scares and what not, it got shut down, it's too bad, there were some amazing cards. And the debacle, was just that. Actually, more of a cluster f***, and as DC would say, that's not a candy bar, milk chocolatey cluster f***s dont exist. Full of nougat and f***... Off track.. Ok, well here's a link to the "new" thread; http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?p=8173917#post8173917

But for the love of god can we please have nothing like what happened there go down here!!!

What do you guys use for tokens? I use the actually tokens but I use to use custom adventure time ones and I've seen people use Pokemon cards as tokens.

There is this one guy I know who has a bunch of awesome proxies. Original dualies, alt-art cards, foil mindsculptors. They look really real to.

Glass beads from a craft store. They are black "cat's-eye" flattened beads so you can turn them upside down to tap them. Dirt cheap and I keep a bunch of them and some dice in a Crown Royal bag.

Fancy. I use colored ones for soul bonding.

I use proxies for expensive cards I already own a playset of.  For example if I have 2 decks that need 4 copies of {misty rainforest} then one deck will have proxies and the other will have the real deal.

I also have like 4 decks with playsets of {birds of paradise} so I got some gold bordered birds, colored the borders black, sleeved em up, and game on!!!!

As long as you have the real card to back it up with I'm fine if you use a proxy.
(You meaning people in general)

What's a proxy?
A cheap substitute for a card. I use proxies only if Im going to get the card just haven't gotten my hands on it yet. Also are they allowed at FNM or anything?

It's usually up to the judge. Sometimes they'll let you proxy if you have like 3 {Cavern of Souls} and don't have the 4th, but not if you built a deck around {Bonfire of the Damned} and don't have any.

Officially, proxies are only allowed at events if made my a judge, and only if there is a good reason (lost/stolen/damaged).  However, if a casual FNM wants to allow proxies, they can make their own rules.  Just don't expect it, and especially not at a formal event.

I just write on the card name that I'm proxying on a basic land with a sharpie.  It's a great way to play test a card if you're not sure if you want to spend the money.  Of course, I only do this in a casual environment.  I have yet to go to an FNM that allows proxies.

Agreed.
I hate it when people play a mountain "Bonfire of the Dammed" to kill me.
