Title: More of a serious matter, MtG unrelated. Large amount of reading required.
Post by: 1337m00nm4n on July 23, 2012, 09:57:38 PM
So, yeah, as the title says, this is not related to MtG and is gonna be a wall of text. As you're reading I'm sure you're going to want to know why I chose here as a place to vent this out, it's because I know that this is a safe and anonymous online community of which I have friends and don't need to worry about being flamed or this spreading.

So to the actual point. In the past, I have suffered from depression, and gone through many counselors. Finally, they decided to put me on medicine that kept me happy and was working well. However, recently my mood has been steadily going down. I've been thinking about things in the big picture, and the more I do the more I get depressed. Politicians are ignorant and likely corrupt, selfish, and ultimately evil. Anyone that ever tries to rise against this is silenced. Then there's the fact that the economy sucks and it doesn't really seem like it's gonna get that much better by the time I'm old enough to get a job. Then there's the part about me being an antisocial geek that probably will never really get married.... and I can't seem to save any money. I always spend it on impulse. And I'm ashamed to live in America... for reasons that I won't write because I'm afraid to offend people. Ask me what they are if you wan't and I'll send a PM to you. Anyways, I just feel like my future is bleak in America, because I don't really take interest in anything that might be useful to me in my future... so I'm getting really depressed again. Just not sure what to do about it, I don't want to go back to the doctors or counseling because they never really understand and it just causes me more trouble and sadness. :/

America definitely isn't in it's prime. The best you can do is make pro-Canada jokes and not let it get to you. Gone through the same thing on a lesser level.

Everyone! Have a ton of kids (when you can) and teach them the values of not being a$$høles, saving the environment, and magic the gathering. Then release them into the world to spread the word of the IMTGists.

Agreed. I do think it will get better in time. At least that is my hope. As for the future, don't stress it so hard. I will speak for myself by saying I was the slightly chubby, glasses wearing, top-of-the-class, fantasy/comic read nerd growing up. But the really cool thing is this, it all changes as you get older. All the crap that seems to matter in youth passes.  I am happily married for almost a decade, two great kids, and still nerdy. Same holds for my of my nerdy friends. For most if us our "career" interests show up around 16-20 (my observations).

Hey I'm sorry for what you are going through and most of what I can help with us not being able to save money. I'm the one in my group of friends that has always blown his money kinda quick but I spend it eating out but random stuff for me or my friends. I have always spent money on friends because when they are happy that is when I am happiest. Saving money I've tried. Save for only what you need or some big for your self (like my friends sleeves he wants). About a hour ago I was at walmart with some of my room mates and I bought the last five packs of m13 just because it was just under $22. And we just gave each crap the entire time. But that is me.

If you want I would like to hear about some of the other stuff bothering you. I won't be offended or judge.

Dear OP,

It's easy to let outside influences affect your psychological being.  Depression is a disease, and one way that is proven to work is to attend some support meetings with others whom also share your ailments.  Try not to focus on things that are out of your control, or they can easily spiral out of control.

I can relate on depression feelings because of direct consequences on my life and well being from the decisions of others both close and distant to me, but I've (with the help of others, professional and personal) developed the tools to play with the cards I've been dealt, but it would be a lie if I said it is always easy to cope with certain situations.

If you ever need someone to talk to hit me up in PMs, and I'll give you the best support I can.  Some days are better than others, but every day I'm greatful that there is another day.

America is at a low point, everyone agrees. But the whole world is. Our economy is in the basement but Europe is about to collapse under its own weight. Since we are down here the only way is to go up and the only way we can go up is if we rise together and take back our country from the government.

Maybe try a hobby that involves physical activity:  Jogging, weights, martial arts, or my personal favorite, juggling.

Whenever I'm feeling unJestery, I'll do housework or go for a walk, or something like that.

Or, if you listen to Penn's Sunday School podcast on iTunes (and you should!  It's explicit, but hilarious!) you can eliminate all of your problems in the world but one by lighting yourself on fire.  Guaranteed, you will not have anything else on your mind for like 30 seconds or so.  (No, I'm not really suggesting you light yourself on fire.  That would hurt.  Don't do it.)

Funny youtubers!  Man, I've been down in the s---, and watching Tobuscus/Pewdiepie/Smosh helped.

And yeah, I totally agree with the people saying excercise.  I had this point where I was crazy about this girl, and I knew she couldn't care less about me, but I kept my head up by just walking a lot.  It doesn't necessarily take a gym subscription or heavy weight lifting.  I just strolled around te park listening to music for an hour or two.

And just so you know, being a geek doesn't mean you can't get a girlfriend/wife.  Women can be equally geeky!  And I know ugly usually goes hand-in-hand with geeky, but it doesn't have to.  I'm sure there are plenty of hot nerdy girls out there!  And yeah, looks aren't everything, but, hey, nerds are awesome.  They like to do fun stuff, not boring stuff.

As for the economy/government, you kinda just have to go with it.  I wish there was more advice I could give on that :-\. The economy has it's ups and downs.  I believe it is every 8-12 yearsthere is a recession/depression (I think.  Spent most of my time in business class asleep...)  there isn't really much anyone can do about that.  Eventually the country will roll out of it, we just have to give ittime.  And hey, I am old enough to need a job and can't find anything.  At least you have a couple years of waiting fir the economy to straighten up.

Damn I get long-winded in the early early morning!

Teenage years are a bitch, no?

Oh, and for saving money, the best thing I can think of is to force yourself to put it into a savings account and not touch it.  And don't get a debit card immediately after like I did.  I'm still blowing all my money even though I don't have any actual dollar bills....

I've been through some pretty crappy stuff, but I've always found that friends and family are usually a pretty good way to help keep your chin up!

If it helps, my wife is hot and nerdy.  We watch ST:tNG and she thinks Picard is tha bomb, and he's old and bald (and STILL a bad ass!).  I'm telling you this because she likes me for my sense of humor, my attitude, and confidence.  Chicks dig that.  Just don't be a DB, that's not confidence, that's cockiness.

A big part of healthy relationships is being happy with who you are, comfortable in your own skin.  I'm sure you're a cool dude, just relax and go with it.

You have to look at it like this. In all reality it doesnt really affect you directly. U may think it does now, but once you get about20 and all u do is work you spend less time on the youtube videos and more time just trying to pay bills. I went thrpw this when i was in the sixth grade and i have a close friend that is going throw it now. Just hang in there and dnt do anything crazy, just keep your mine clear.

Praying and staying active works for me. As for the money, it is self discipline, something I am not good at. One thing that did work was that I opened a bank account at a bank a good distance away from me. I had no way to get the money that did not involve a 45min drive... There were many times that I would drive there and change my mind before withdrawing any of it.

Just not sure what to do about it, I don't want to go back to the doctors or counseling because they never really understand and it just causes me more trouble and sadness. :/

First things first IGNORE THE BIG PICTURE. Now that this is out of the way we can focus on your concerns. The fact that you are here on this forum asking for help is a big step in the right direction for stopping this depression. Also you are not antisocial as you are on a forum talking about something you love with other people who share the same interest. This seems like being social to me as you had to find out about this somewhere be it interwebz or a friend. There is also a great saying that the geek will inherit the earth. The never get married thing may also stem from the antisocial thing, but simply means you haven't met "HER" yet. This is not going to be easy both finding and keeping this lucky girl. However you still have some years before this happens. I also have an idea that may help save you money. Talk to your parents about what income you have and ask that they only ever give you half of it and that they deposit the rest into an account in your name that is locked from you using without their consent. America in my opinion is the lesser of all the evils in the world. Europe is in trouble with their money. The middle east is in turmoil and Asia is going to destroy itself for progress. America may be having problems, but you at least don't have to worry about being shot for what you believe in, or what is going to happen now that your country is bankrupt and you have no job and no chance to get a job. You think that there is no chance for change in America. That no one man can make a difference. I won't change your mind, that battle was lost when you started believing this. I will however point out that we have a holiday devoted to one man who made a difference. India is a country because one man made a difference. We have Magic the Gathering because one man dared to say "is this possible" how can I take this idea and turn it into reality? You just have to find your passion in life and stick to it no matter what. If you can please list all of the things that you enjoy doing in this thread. I will attempt to help you find something that can put some cash into your pocket and make you happy at the same time.

Sorry to all who have to read this As I am just coming out of some of these issues myself and just want to help.

Moon, sorry to hear you're having troubles. I really hope you feel better soon. I understand obnoxiously well, having struggled with it for nearly 20 years now. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II disorder in 2004, so ups & downs are kind of my specialty. As for doctors, I recommend you keep checking out new ones until you meet one that you connect with. I went through the gauntlet of idiots myself, but eventually found some doctors that helped me, and it made a world of difference.

If you need to chat about any of this kind of stuff, public or private, post or pm me, I'm more than happy to share my experiences if it might help you.  Hang in there, it gets better.
