Title: Magic Comic-Con News
Post by: Prophylaxis on July 15, 2012, 12:54:38 AM
I've noticed quite a few threads about this, so I will gather it all up and sticky for convenience.

Koopa from MTGSalvation:

Thoughts on the MTG Panel:

FTV: Realms:
They spoiled Urborg, Tomb of Yagomth; Glacial Chasm; Grove of the Burnwillow; Forbidden Orchard; and Dryad Arbor.

I was unimpressed until I saw the Arbor. WHICH IS BEAUTIFUL! (looking for a picture right now) Like crazy beautiful... It has a Modern frame (the regular frame, not future sight), has the color indicator that they used on the "night side" of werewolves, and the text box... nothing. Just the Green symbol used on Basic Forest.

Commander Arsenal:
No more premium decks... oh no I don't care.
A commander product every year Commander sets? Score. Thumbs up.

Duel Decks: Golgari vs Izzet:
We get the name, type, and manacost of the Golgari Legend... nobody cares, give me a little more so I care.

Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and "Sinker".

Oh wow, lots of information here... basically all upside.

First, guilds coming back. This was obvious but it's good to hear it's happening as this is yet another hint at Shocks coming back. RtR will have Izzet, Azorious, Rakdos, Selesnya, and Golgari. With Simic, Gruul, Boros, Orzhov, and Dimir being in Gatecrash. All guilds have new keywords. The guilds watermarks are slightly changed, but still easy to identify.

Second, this is a Ravnica block, so no planar jumping as was speculated before.

Third. The set cycle will be Big-Big-Small. So come fall you will draft RtR, RtR, RtR. In winter, you will draft Gatecrash, Gatecrash, Gatecrash. Then come Spring, you will draft Return to Rav, Gatecrash, "Sinker" (but in reverse order obv). This is cool.

At the prerelease, you get to choose your guild. So come the Return to Ravnica Prerelease, I could choose say Izzet (which I will) and I will get the following:

-5 Return to Ravnica packs.
-A Guild pack of your guild with 15 cards of those colors.
-Promo prerelease card (which there will be 5 promos for Return and Gateway, one for each guild.)
-Guild spindown.
-Guild sticker.
-A letter from your guild leader and...
-A Prerelease challenge card.

This is all good except the fact that you get to also play with your prerelease card, which will be an auto-include in everyone's deck.

Also, there are two PW in RtR. One is Jace.
In Gatecrash, the tagline is "Fight for your guild" and Gideon is confirmed to be one of the two PW in that set. All hints and the picture of him scream he will be Boros.

Funny part. MaRo asked what the most important thing in Ravnica was and the audience screams "Shocklands!" of which Maro replies... "Yea and Guilds..."

Anyway, I was very impressed. Good panel overall.

M13 sucks a fat one IMHO. Save your money anyways. M13 will likely not add much to standard, probably add to Ravnica, has some of the worst rares that I could ever remember, and a boring draft environment.

Gonna have to research before I vote., leaning B/G or B/R. Though R/U was the first deck I ever made. So those colors hold a special place.

True.  But they'll also be giving you a guild sticker.  I'll be wearing mine on my forehead.
So they know what guild you are.  It's a sealed event, and pretty casual too.  If they sideboard differently, or whatever is it really going to be a huge tactical advantage?  They'll know after your first couple of lands anyway.

I always want to win atleast two packs when i go, but I'm mainly at the prerelease for fun. However i switch to super competitive pretty easy i found out at this last event. I pulled {stuffy doll} and played it all night without having to say a target, a gesture was enough in such a casual enviroment. However on the last match i tapped stuffy doll and my opponent (someone i played often, but wouldnt call more than an acquaintance) said "you didnt choose a player". That was it, i snapped, looked at him coldly and said "fine then, this wont be an enjoyable match" and stomped him 2-0 and caught every little priority mistake he made. I felt kinda bad after, but he's a grown man, he can deal with it. And it didnt hurt our relationship (what little there is).

I know this scenario well. Its infuriating to see people who want the rules followed to the T but when it's there turn they play kitchen table style. My roommate ripped into a dude pretty heavily for this.

There's a promo for each guild guild, but what rarity is impossible to say. Would be nice to get a mythic like Niv Mizzet himself as the promo, but I'm guessing based on recent past prerelease promos that it'll be a rare "big-wig" of the guild, probably not mythic.  100% speculation.

Im going Izzet all the way.

Also, do you think there will be mythic promos?

There's a promo for each guild guild, but what rarity is impossible to say. Would be nice to get a mythic like Niv Mizzet himself as the promo, but I'm guessing based on recent past prerelease promos that it'll be a rare "big-wig" of the guild, probably not mythic.  100% speculation.
Shock land promos? Hahaha

Probably also legendary. Assuming they're reprints:
Izzet: {Tibor and Lumia} or {Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind}
Azorious: {Grand Arbiter Augustin IV} or {Insperia the Inscrutable}
Selesnya: {Chorus of the Conclave} or {Tolsimir Wolfblood}
Rakdos: {Rakdos the Defiler} or {Lyzoldia the Blood Witch}
Golgari: {Savra, Queen of the Golgari} or {Sisters of Stone Death}

I'm predicting all new printings of legendary "big-wigs", no reprints.  For the promos that is.  And I really, REALLY hope that Nivvy makes it to PW status.  Gimmie my Izzet Planeswalker!

Also, now there's no love for Golgari in the polls.  Interesting development.

I don't know if it would have to be, it's not as though every {U} PW has to be Jace.
I could see them going either way, really.

Sorry bro, it was confirmed guild leaders would be legendary creatures. Nivvy is a guild leader. Sorry man.

That or {R}{B} if mixed at all. The walkers don't have to follow the trends of the plane.

There is a RTR add I got in a m13 pack that shows Jace standing with Niv Mizzet next to him.
Mahber a {U}{R} Jace Planeswalker?

It's been spoiled (though I can't remember where exactly) that Jace will be returning in RtR.  Putting him next to Nivy seems to suggest an Izzet {U}{R} alliance, but Jace has always felt more Azorius {W}{U} to me than anything.  They are not going to put him in a guild that won't be in RtR, they'll want him to support a guild.  Yet another mono-{U} would make him more versatile, and I would hate that.  I'd LIKE to see him in Izzet, but it feels off to me.   :-\

There were pics on Zendikar block with Sorin and Nissa together, but they shared no colors.  So I don't know how much weight the Niv connection should carry.
