I enjoyed the" hours poured into video games" thread so here is a related tangent. What was the hardest game you can recall? I just got soul calibur 4. All told I probably poured 25 hours into it and all but an hour or so of that was getting repeatedly crushed by 2 of the stages in Tower of Lost Souls mode. But even more soul shatteringly difficult was the classic Zelda 2. Just wow, was that hard. Anyone else been broken by a difficult game?

Starfox 64... On the 64. The dumb controls made it damn near impossible to beat. Actually, ANY game I've played on the Nintendo 64. They're all F-Off hard and but draw you in so well. I think I lost hair in Ocarina of Time.
N64 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Some of those puzzles would take me weeks to figure out! Then when I did figure it out, I either felt like a complete moron because the answer was so damn simple, or, still to this day have no idea what I did but it worked and onward I went.
Side note, went to relive the glory days and bought an N64 and Zelda. Hooked er up to my 47 FULL LED (not that LED/LCD crap) and wow was I disappointed! Nostalgia wore off and I was just sad that it looked so bad! Ah aren't we spoiled these days!
I guess the graphics do look pretty bad, but I play my N64 far more more than my XBOX 360, so I'm used to it. I just love everything about LoZ:OoT and Pokemon Stadium. I get frustrated to no end, but I keep crawling back.

I'd need to buy a crappy tube tv to play Zelda again. It's terrible on mine.
I can't recall the ONE most difficult game I've ever played but I got Odin Sphere for the ps2 and it is just...so...frustrating. Beautiful game, it's just all the grinding! There's this stage where you fight a mini boss berserker dude who hacks half your lifebar away with his charge attack. Wanna know what's funny? You go up against two of those +minions in a latter stage. I quit :3

I play N64 Smash Bros and OoT on a LCD all the time. I love my 64 =P
They look so bad cuz the old systems are 480 resolution on a big wide-screen that is meant to show in 1080.
Amnesia: the Dark Descent. Between the puzzles and the utterly terrifying environment with the shadow thing following you, not an easy game. It's one hell of an indie game though. Highly recommend it to anyone who likes to pee themselves whilst playing a game :)
Oh, and Dead Space 1. While the original campaign isn't too hard, Impossible difficulty is ridiculous. Definitely brutal.

I had to stop playing it because it was creeping me out. Scariest game... Or for that matter ANYTHING I've ever experienced.

I only play it in 20-30 minute intervals. I FINALLY made it to the inner sanctum lol. It's so much fun with headphones on though. Where did you quit playing? Apparently a lot of people quit at the prison.
Portal 2
SMT: Nocturne hands down the hardest game I have ever played. Still haven't gotten through the last stage cause all of the trapped doors.
Minesweeper on the hardest difficulty.

Actually not that hard. Minesweeper is just process of elimination. Plus the double click makes it so easy

I bailed pretty early on. Soon after that invisible "stay out of the water creature" that chases you down the flooded corridor I was too freaked to go on. I started hearing children's voices begging for their lives and that was it.

I hate Minesweeper because of that, I can use inductive reasoning throughout the entirety of the "map" after a good click or two, and there's always a section that is impossible to solve, at least that's what I think. Idk, but I dislike it, at least I can finish Impossible Sudoku puzzles! You can't finish Minesweeper without luck.

To give you an idea of the difficulty curve of this game, the special edition coming out on PC is the "Prepare to Die" edition.... They do not kid.
Tetris. Never could make it to the end.
Going to show my age here but the hardest game I remember playing was ShadowGate on the NES. My brother and I spent a whole summer playing that game (which if I remember right did not have a save option). It was one hell of a D&Dish crawl/puzzle that was built to take too many random choice into play. Example, you could set yourself on fire for no reason or just opt to stab yourself. But once we beat it I could do it again in less than a couple hours.
I think most of the games for Nintendo when you didn't have save points. The two that come to mind that seemed to take forever are castlevania and mega man the original

I agree. I enjoy a good challenge. The thrill of adversity.
Like slowly working your way through the gyms and tournaments of Pokemon Stadium... Without using Sand-Attack.
Pole position II for Atari 7200. Seriously hated those new and improved controllers.

For sure. But I think part if it is that play control has gotten better/more responsive. If you go back and play on the old NES or whatever, you can feel quickly that many games really don't have control, it can be frustrating. No wonder we had tantrums as kids.
Def have gotten easier. Like Castlevania, F that game. Prince of Persia? Jesus that game was brutal! Anybody remember Chips Challenge? That game was as good as Afleck in Phantoms!
... No sarcasm.

^These^
And kid Icarus. Those old games send you to the beginning for losing at the end of the game. It's like if you made it to 8th grade but failed. Instead of trying 8th grade over you go back to kindergarten.
When I get my iPad next week, if they don't have chips challenge, I'm going to be soooo pissed. I want to play that game so bad now. Oh and that pipe game. It was like tetris, random pipe pieces, start and end points, then the green ooze came a flowin! Loved that game!
I was trying to find a rage comic or similar that I saw comparing games now to older games. Before, things really got progressively hard and harder. Battletoads on SNES anyone? Now, all you need to finish a game is to plop down and put the time in. There are hard games out there, dont get me wrong, but it's rare to come across the insane unbeatability of some old vintage games. And no save points. Megaman 2 STILL drives me nuts.

Battletoads on the NES was hilarious, but so damn hard it was essentially impossible without game genie.
And the old megaman games 1-6 were all amazing. 2 and 3 were the best.
Ghosts n goblins - NES. Hardest game ever IMO. Thought about it more last night lol

I've seen it a couple times on here, but definitely the old Mega Man games. I've spent countless hours trying to finish those and rage quitting on the final level or 2. So hard sometimes.

Yes yes! I love Mega Man, and the various boss levels were fine, but MAN trying to make it past some of those Dr. Wily final stages... pure evil!
I mean most of the times if you found the pattern or the trick they weren't so bad. But I STILL remember wanting to punch a hole through my TV. And that was a CRT!
Mega man 1 the Cyclopes was a pain if you didn't have the power up electric man or fire man power up.
But these games made me savor every item I found. I remember beating games on ps2 and up without using the power ups.

Mega Man was all about pattern recognition and knowing the proper order to fight the villains. Each guy had a weakness... until the Final stages. >:(

You wanna talk about getting stressed over that moon? My older brother would pin me down in the last minutes of the third day and I would have to watch that creepy moon kill everyone. I'm still paranoid whenever I play Majoras Mask.
