Title: Morph/Transformed Question
Post by: RevanJJ on July 11, 2012, 03:33:58 PM
Hello all,

I have a question that came up during a game recently and we could not quite square it.

If a creature with Morph, like {Putrid Raptor} is in play, played facedown as a 2/2 creature, then is killed and sent to the graveyard; may I return him using a card like {Zombie Apocalypse} or would he only count as a 2/2 creature with no type? The same question about a transformed card like {Loyal Cathar} after dying and being transformed, when it dies and if I bring it back does he come back as his original state or as the last, transformed state?

My opponent contended that {Zombie Apocalypse} would not be able to bring {Putrid Raptor} back as he was played facedown as a 2/2. I contended that that is just a function of his ability set and when his zone changed, so did his state, thus allowing him to be brought back as {Putrid Raptor}. I also contended that in the case of the {Loyal Cathar}, for similar reasons , he would come back in his non-transformed state. I may be, and probably am very wrong.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer. :)

I believe you are correct here. The zone change would make the creature 'forget' it was a 2/2 creature, and it would count as its normal self.

You are correct. When the morph 2/2 creature dies it goes to the gy but in the gy it's the raptor. It will be the card. Not what it went as. For instance. If I play {Phantasmal Image} and copy {Gisela, Blade of Goldnight}. When the copy dies it GOES to the gy as Gisela. But once it enters the gy it once again becomes an Image.
{Zombie Apocolypse} will bring back the raptor but not the cathar.

Morph creatures are only 2/2 facedown creatures while they are face down on the Battlefield.  Anywhere else, they are what is printed on the card.

Similarly, Double-faced Cards (DFC) are only ever "moon-side up" when they are on the BF and have been transformed.  Everywhere else, the game only sees their "sunny side up".

I know that it's already been answered, but I just wanted to be perfectly clear about the situation.

Just messing' around BJ. And I don't think anyone really said what you did with enough clarity anyway. Things are too easily confused when not clearly stated.

I didn't say it as clearly as BJ but I got it.
