Looking for suggestions. I figure the spikeshot elder and the hydras would be good targets for counters if ole Smaug doesn't show up.
This deck looks awesome :) Btw, why is {Slumbering Dragon} being called Smaug?

Its a reference to the book "The Hobbit"
or "There and back again" :P
Also conjurers closet could help if you ran more beatles and rangers but may not be worth it..
Other than that this looks mighty solid!
Thx guys. Yea conjurers closet cost 5 and I am trying to keep the CMC low. But flickering those guys is an idea I did not think about.
{Quest for the gemblade} splashing black for {Jund charm} could work. Then you could add {Grim affliction} for prolifirate and "removal" {Volt charge} could replace it though.

Not sure splashing black is worth it but I like the gem blade. What would you take out to add 1-4 gem blade?
Id switch the guides straight out.
Gemblade has great synergy with both spikeshot and beatle

Not really since the creature has to do combat damage to trigger gemblade.
Maybe swapping the beetles since their 0/1 will not do combat damage. The guides will at least be a 1/1 chump blocker to help trigger the gemblade.

Oh i thought the beatles were 1/1 by default, my mistake! Then definitly the beatles!
Maybe {deranged outcast} although idk if theres enough humans to justify it...
That might work faster than forgotten ancient but as you stated there may be to few humans though. It can always sacrifice itself though.

Yea that is not a bad idea. It would be faster than the ancient but the ancient could be worth the wait for a casual game since he triggers for every spell cast.

"There and Back Again
A Hobbits Tale"
Wasn't that what Bilbo named it?

Exactly! :D
First play test I had a 38/38 primordial hydra swing for game. It was against a 5 color Titan deck with mana ramp and all the Titans from M10-M12
Post more as you keep testing! Im very curious about this decks progress!
The {forgotten ancient} with {primal cocoon} helped get the hydra so big. He kept tapping my {primordial hydra} with {frost Titan} until I played Smaug and {increasing savagery} on turn 6 or 7 making ole Smaug an 8/8 flyer ready for business. He attacked and tapped Smaug. On my upkeep I was able to move 9 counters from {forgotten ancient} onto the hydra who already had 10......so the 19 doubled to 38 and he did not have enough titans to block that much ;)

Thought about that but it is only good for green creatures.
I am in love with this deck. Was playing against quick zombie deck. My initial hand only 1 mountain but I had 2 Smaug. I kept it add put Smaug in play. He plays {dark ritual} into {geralf's messanger}. Second draw I get some needed green mana so I play 2nd Smaug and {bond beetle} to add counter to Smaug 1. His turn two an attack....chump block with beetle and he plays {carrion feeder} then sacs the messenger and comes back from undying. My turn three I get another land and play another beetle so now Smaug 1 has 3 counters and Smaug 2 has 1. His turn he knows attacking with both brings Smaug 1 up to 5 counters and attacking with just the messanger will be chumped blocked by the beetle so he just plays some small zomb and passes. My turn 4 I {lightning bolt} his messanger and {hunger of the howlpack} Smaug 1....he conceedes. Game 2 with him went about the same....he either did not have a lot of removal or just got unlucky and didn't draw it......either way Smaug really kept his attacks at bay cuz he did not want to add countes to him.
I also updated the deck a bit. Added {forked bolt} the DD spells and {hunger of the howl pack} are so fast for early game counters. Also found {strength of the tajuru} so added 1.
This is really cool. Love the idea of the opponent being unwilling to attack! Maybe side in {heckling fiends} for cases of aggro decks that just can't answer your sleeping dragon.
Such a cool deck!! Luv the name...I always liked "The Hobbit" over the LoTR trilogy books.
Have you considered the rings from m13? I could see some application there, maybe.
Also, do you have a sideboard? I think you could find some really creative and effective cards to side in to this deck.
I generally don't make SB for fun casual decks. I did consider those rings but they are too slow and they only apply to creatures of one color. I like {primal cocoon} in that slot cuz it costs only 1 green and does the same thing as the rings....more or less.
What about fling as an alt win con? If someone tries to doom blade Smaug, you could sac him in response and do a ton of direct damage. Also do you even need {rancor} in the deck? Lol
Also {fling} would make it adaptable to multiplayer since you could attack and blow up your creature to hit someone else. Also, {berserk} ;)
I liked this deck a lot so I bought a version of it. In mine I run 4x {Increasing Savagery} because it can pump anything enough to win. I've killed people with {Bond Beetle}s before. :D
{blessings of nature} might be good.

I run two in my version. Its a pretty good...
Also I run {Rancor} to help ol' {Smaug} get through.
