Hello. I am relatively new to MtG, and would love some advice. I am working on my third deck, a Control deck centering on {Dominus of Fealty}, {Mind Control}, {Act of Treason} and similar cards. I am still trying to whittle the deck down closer to 60 cards, and am struggling to find the right balance of defense, offense, and creatures. I would love any suggestions on "must have" cards and any other advice you may be able to offer. My husband (who got me really started in MtG) has been a great help, but sometimes it is great to hear other opinions.
Thank you so much in advance!
PS- My first two decks are a very successful green/white creature based deck and an OK Vampire deck.
So your deck sounds like it fits in a Modern format. If your building your deck around Fealty you gotta be able to stabilize the board so you don't get your head bashed in. I noticed that you mentioned some cards that gain control of your opponents creatures. That's good but they get the creature back and then continue to beat you down with them UNLESS you gain control of the creatur, attack them with there own creature and then sacrifice the creature so they don't get it back! Otherwise just gaining control of there creature for one turn isn't really good at all. It would be better to just remove there creature from the game entirely. So your colors are Red and Blue. Must have cards would be 4 {Lightning Bolt}'s, 4 {Mana Leaks} perhaps some Cancels. In a control deck you control the board of creatures and nasty spells until you play a big fat fatty creature that they can't remove and you just whip them up and down. Also control decks need some kind of card drawing engine or spell like perhaps {Divination} or {Concecrated Sphinx} from the new Morrodin block. So control the board with burn spells and counter magic until you play your big fat creature. Sorry this is alot.lol. I've been playing magic since 94 and have played some really good players and looked at deck types. Good to see some one I interested in becoming better at Magic. hope this helped some!
Wow. Thanks for all the info! I already have some of what you mentioned in there, and will continue to tweak the deck with all this in mind.
If you could post your deck this would help
In for people to see what you have and what ya need. I myself am just getting back into magic
If you want board control, look for spells/abilities that tap your opponents creatures, like Gideon's Lawkeeper from the 2012 coreset
Since youre playing modern, slagstorm will be a great card and make sure you have the frost and inferno titan as youre biggies :) and maybe even wurmcoil wont hurt too :)
Why do you guys recommend cards (lightning bolt) for "standard" decks 2 days before they're ruled out? There are so many of these recommendations that I'm starting to doubt that I even know when they roll out.
Reading the posts, I thought this was a Modern deck, not a Standard deck.
Righto! My bad.
{Fling} is a great card to run with {Dominus of Fealty} cuz you can attack them with their creature and then sac their creature to deal more dmg :)
You could also use a mortar pod. Reload it every turn until they're out of creatures.
