Title: Targeting planeswalkers
Post by: Scaevolla on June 20, 2012, 06:29:36 AM
Can I target a planeswalker with a "target player gains (insert number here) life" and if so what happens?

No you cannot make a planeswalker gain life because the counters on a planeswalker are loyalty counters not life counters

You can only target planeswalkers with "target permanent" effects.  If a source you control would deal non-combat damage to an opponent, you may redirect all of that damage (not part of it) to a planewalker they control is it resolves.  If they have {Witchbane Orb}, for example, you can't target them with a {Shock}, and so can't redirect it to one of their Planeswalkers.  Also, they won't know you if you are going to redirect it until it resolves, which would be too late for them to try to prevent it otherwise.

But for combat damage, you can only redirect it if it is trample damage. Otherwise you have to say from the beginning: "I attack your plainswalker." Right?

Combat damage cannot be redirected.

I'll fix my earlier statement.

One thing that wasn't said that would help a little with this question. I assume you're asking how to make a Planeswalkers gain life (loyalty). One of two ways.

1.  Use his/her + abilities.
2.  You can proliferate.

This post is about attacking planeswalkers. Sorry I'm not starting a new topic but I just want a little clarification:

According to rule 508.1b, if I'm interpreting this correctly, you can specify certain creatures to attack the planeswalker a defending player controls and certain ones to attack the defending player. Is this right? And if so, and they have {Jace Beleren} and {Garruk Wildspeaker} out, can you attack Garruk with one creature, Jace with a different creature, and the defending player with a third creature?

On my way to work and no time to look this up, but I don't see why not.
