Title: A way of life
Post by: Coffee Vampire on June 01, 2012, 09:26:57 PM
Hey all, I have been thinking a bit about different ways to play magic, and I am thinking of switching to legacy instead of standard. I would like some advice though:

For standard players, what do you like or dislike about it?
For legacy players, same thing!
Forthose who have switched from one to the other, how is it?
Also, what about you guys who prefer say....modern? Or commander?

Thanks for any advice, I would appreciate it!

I really like standard just cuz it's fun to always be using new cards, but on the other side of that coin, since cards are always rotating it expensive. I play casual commander too and it's fun to play cuz u can do really crazy things that you might not be able to do in standard or modern or legacy

I like legacy becuase it's far less confining than standard. In standard you run a variation of 10 decks or you lose. In legacy you can play with huge amounts of card interactions.

I play Vintage casually. We aren't very competitive an the guys like showing off some of their 💰 cards. If I were to play competitive, I'd probably go with Modern instead. Seems like a good middle ground btw the nutty insanity and $$$ of Legacy and less of the "constantly buy new stuff" of Standard.

Legacy and Standard are almost very similar.

- the cost of breaking into Standard (on a competitive level) and Legacy are nearly similar...but...

- good Legacy decks can cost thousands

- Legacy is not nearly as supported as Standard. Standard gets all the press, tournament coverage, FNM attention and the fame. Legacy barely gets support.

- People claim that home brewing in Legacy is possible. In my experience, Legacy is a brutal aggro-based format that punishes anyone who can't predict their next cards.

- Legacy is a better casual format, you have the entire magic catalog of cards. The possibilities are endless.

I play both, I take breaks from Standard because the way the meta changes, trends come in and out too often. My legacy deck cost thousands, but now I'm done. Standard costs me a lot (new cards, tournament fees, R&D) and doesn't contribute enough to my happiness.

Okay. Thanks.

So I have decided to get into legacy. What is the best way? I see 3 options:

1) Drop standard and do legacy
2) Break into standard then go into legacy
3) go into modern and slowly change modern decks to legacy

Suggestions?

Modern is a sinking format, according to people I've talked to. I've never actually played a single game, and I don't really even know when/where they're played.

Legacy is something you can start on a budget, then gradually add the better cards. Mostly every single big $$$ card has a watered down, budget version. Build toward the deck you ultimately would like.

Edit: example: I couldn't afford {enlightened tutor}, so for awhile I rocked {Fabricate} instead. Couldn't afford {Tundra} for a long long time, so I used {Glacial Fortress}.

Do u think u could post a sample version of that ^? I'd like to see it. And I looked through the legacy posts and I only found 1, which was worth about $500-$700

My Arti Swarm deck in Legacy is a home brew Affinity....ish deck that does really good.  It did not cost that much and I acquired most of the cards through trades.  The only difference is that my deck is kind of an Aggro-Mid range instead of purely Aggro.  My deck has the capability of a fast swarm of 3 creatures on turn 1 but it also has the potential for mid-game success when I start casting the higher CMC spells or the unanswered {steel overseer} just keeps beefing up my little {ornithopters}.  Some ppl don't like PW in Legacy and all you generally see is {Jace the mind sculptor} and {likiana of the veil} but I love {Tezzeret agent of bolas} in my deck and he has helped me push that final damage in with his second ability.
