Yes overlord!

Less of this please.

On topic, I would like to share that I really started focusing in theories of evolution when I read the book "The Metemorphisis".

Have you read Origin of Species?

Not fully. But a chapter or two for my post bachelor sociology course.

It's really good. I quote from it all the time when arguing with my teachers in school

I really don't mind being called Overlord.  It's got a nice ring to it.

The thread that lead to this was really talking about human behavior and social evolution, but then it took a turn to genetic/biological evolution.  So, here we are.

Okay...I posted in response to your quote Jester, but seeing your later post I copied and removed it. Should I post it here? :p

Also Blackjester: if you are willing to admit that human nature exists as well as evolution, I must ask where it came from. At what point did human nature even exist, and what makes you think that something better will replace it?

I am very willing to admit that we can observe the behavior of the human animal can mark our observations down as "human nature".  I can admit that if something changes over time, we can call that evolution.  I don't know where the cans of Coke in the vending machine came from, but I am pretty sure that when I put my money in, one will come out and I can drink it and discuss the taste of Cherry Cola without describing the plant that produced it.

When I talk about the evolution of human behavior, it doesn't have to be in any context other than, "We used to to this, now we don't", "African-Americans used to not be allowed to vote in the US now they can."  I'd consider that social evolution, wouldn't you?

Your first analogy...the cherry coke one doesn't seem to connect with what I was asking you. I asked why you thought human natire would improve since our level of selfishness has stayed the same or gotten worse throughout history (whether you believe in evolution or not). But as a response to it: I agree that we can discuss the current state of humans without going very deep, but just as you can only know so much about cherry cola by tasting it, if you wish to know more you must study the roots. Of course we can live our lives only "tasting" humanity, but if we would like to know the "ingrediants", we must dig deeper.

As to your second part (the one that isn't about soda), the fact that African Americans used to be excluded from voting rights does not have to do with the subject at hand. There are many kinds of evolution, and my answer to your question is yes; I do believe that is social evolution. But there are many different kinds of evolution. We should not get them confused.

I just used the pop metaphor (soda = pop in Canada) in a attempt to isolate the discussion of human behavior through recorded history and focus on factual information and less on subjective sentiments.

Ah, I see where you were coming from now. But I do want to know what you refer to as "subjective sentiments". I think that to discuss human behavior, one must delve into how humans have behaved in the past.

Of course!  I firmly believe that education and learning is a path to better social evolution. The cultures of the past that valued science, education, and understanding were the most socially progressive and evolving.
