Title: Anyone want my cards?
Post by: MasteroftheCraft on May 27, 2012, 08:20:05 PM
I feel old for a 17 year old, i havent won a MTG game for a few years now, and i dont understand the new-age stuff. Hell, i barely understand half the crap posted on this forum. So i think its time i hang up my belt and get outta Dodge.

Me, but I'm 19 and don't win a lot. You could always just play for fun

Not when it never IS fun! Nowadays, i can only stand playing a person i know for a few rounds, andi just scoop, because i know i wont win. Know how i tell? Because they ask for money and get it, without workinh for it, and go buy the latest cards. (sigh) too many people have forgotten the old things & ways that i feel obsilete...
Im like an old dog: take me out back, and put me out of my misery. :'(

Yeah I hate when people tell there parents to buy them cards. There is this young teenager at my card shop whose "cheap deck" cost him around $300

The most i have ever spent on a deck was around $50, abd it cost me almost all of my birthday money. I still lose... Im feeling very sad now...

There is a super cheap elf deck that made top 4 at game day. The most expensive card was like 2 dollars. I'll list the cards I saw if you wanted to try it out and try playing again

You know, if it's about the money, I've taken down some pretty big budget decks decks with pauper/cheap RWD and elves and stuff.  You can make winning decks on a budget if that's important to you.  I like to have a deck or two to pull out an stomp tha yard when the mood strikes, but for the most part I don't really care about winning.

Multiplayer might be a little different since your odds of winning go down.  But just take a deep breath and ask what it is about magic that you like.  Deck building, combos, getting together with friends, big splashy monsters, winning at all costs.  There are so many ways to have fun in this game, to each their own.

Man, i remembr when i started...
Had just gotten a ton of Invasion cycle cards, and Rav. was just being relesed... Gods, the simpler times...
And then they took MtG and, pardon the expression, RAPED IT UP THE ASS!!!
...and now its not as fun to me anymore.

Hang in there bro. This can be an insanely expensive hobby. But don't let it get ya down. Check out the "building on a budget" articles on the MTG daily WoTC site. Always some good stuff in there. The only advice I have, try a multiplayer variant, like EDH. No sanctioned tourneys or anything, but the card pool is huge, and many good times to be had! Standard is redonk to keep up with!

Its nit that im poor (i am somewhat), its the fact that its all ABOUT the $$ to some people. They seem to have no love or respect fir the game, playing just to shiw off and act like asswipes.

Ah I know those people. Simplying buying the top net decks and showing up at FNM's and being all arrogant about. Hate that.

Dude you know what I love? The people who buy those netdecks a few days before fnm then get murdered because they have no clue how to play the deck the just spent 300 freaking dollars on. It just makes my night ๎•

Maximo, I was just asking lol. Cause I'm a big fan of older cards since I mostly build commander and casual decks

Take your good cards, sell em and make a commander deck. That way you can at least try something new likely enjoy it far more

I feel your pain. I really don't understand a lot of what I read here and some of the cards I figure to be junk are actually the most usefull. But it's really a hobby and something that you should be having fun with. You don't have to spend a lot to enjoy magic, let those other kids brag about the cost of their deck and then burn them to death with a budget red deck :) As long as your having fun keep at it. When it stops being fun I'd say take a break and find something else to occupy your free time. But that's just what I think take it for what it's worth. Also if you do quit I'd eBay your more expensive cards to get some of your investment back and maybe donate some to other players you've enjoyed playing with in the past. Best wishes hope you keep at it

Do what I did. Put them in a shoe box. Deal it with duct tape, and forget about magic for 6 months- 2 years. Then read about new deck mechanics, and work on building a fun new deck. I like stuff like budget elves, turbo fog, and cheap burn, because they are fun to use, and don't kill your wallet.

I know coming from an infect player this may sound odd. But when I play at FNM it is purely to win, I am not arrogant, I'm as cordial as can be, and since scars came out I've been running variants of tr exact same deck to improve upon.

That being said i'm always giving cards away, helping new players, and building other multiplayer and casual variants, some to win, some to be silly, mostly just to have fun. Yes I have some money in decks but I'm just as happy to go rummage through my commons and uncommons to build a new deck to play others.

And one of my secrets to popularity.. Is once I've won where I needed, I slow play, or even throw games (obviously unbeknownst to the other players) when I know people are down or could use a win.

I guess it's just people and personalities. Just play with people that when you leave you felt better than when you came In. To me that's what magics about.  Not leaving frustrated.

How come?  There's nothing wrong with it.  It'll work its way down as more topics get added.  Other members have made some nice comments.  This may help some other readers out there who struggle in their groups too.

To level the playing field go to drafts or sealed events every once in a while or hold one yourself with a few friends. I have been to a few drafts. I either get owned or top 3. Either way it's fun to me because I'll get my one scheme to work and the other player is surprised. It also helps you build up your collection.

I've taken down stacked vintage decks with pauper and peasant decks before.  It's all about play style, how your deck compares to whom you're playing, and luck of the draw.  Miracle cards now have leveled the playing field somewhat so you don't have to have top dollar cards, as well as soul bonding -- there are some good cheap pump card combos out there (stonewright can be amazing when paired with an unblockable for example).  Glad to hear you've decided to hang in there, I quit magic myself for 14 years due to all my cards being stolen when I was younger by a 'friend' and i regret it since if I just stayed with it I could have rebuilt my collection a lot cheaper then than now lol ... I digress; TL;DR - keep on keep it on :)

I play to have fun mainly, but I do say that it's not terribly fun when you are consistently losing. I don't have much money to spend on the game, so my dad and I (he plays as well) borrow cards from each other to make decks. I have had some fairly expensive decks that are all my cards, however this was just because of trading! I ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’š TRADING!!

Oh, and Masterofthecraft, if you need cards that you might not be able to afford, I suggest trading, it helps greatly! (possibly putting up a private page on here...?);)

Yeah man don't even worry about it I've never made a deck over $50 and they all do insanely well just look around on google for budget decks and put your own twist on them and trade here ! Easy way to get cards you need and move cards you don't :) anyways I wish you the beat of luck with everything
