Is fireball and fling considered combat damage, and is hellriders ability considered combat damage?
Nope and nope!
What kind of damage are those considered then, and I'm assuming fog wouldn't work against those types of damage then?
Combat damage is dealt during combat phase by an attacking creature. Those card just deal damage and no fog doesn't prevent them.
Just considered damage from creatures if it's {Hellrider}'s ability. So {Holy Day} won't work but {Ethereal Haze} will.
To make this simpler still, if youve played Pokémon, then you know there are 3 ATTACK TYPES:
1- Physical (aka Combat Damage)
2- Special (aka Damage from non-Combat (Creature Abilities))
3- Status (aka Spell Damage)
To simplify it even more, in magic there are really only 2 kinds of actual damage.
1: Combat Damage - damage dealt in the combat damage phase caused by a creature's power.
2: Non-Combat Damage - damage dealt by anything else, any other time.
Over-simplified, yes, but it usually holds true. Usually.

I think that's perfectly simplified.

Spot on, that's all I would add ;)
