Piplup is by far my favorite. Great coverage of moves, and a unique typing!

Isn't the first boss in every Pokémon game watertype?

The first gym in each game is,
Rock
Flying
Rock
Rock
Varies(counters your starter but you are giving a mon that counters your counter before the gym)
Bug

The reasoning is Rock is weak to water, and Rock often is paired with ground so grass is decent too. That said late game fire starts to be the counter to gyms you will face.

My first game was crystal, cyndaquil was highly advantageous given that you're allowed to face the sprout tower before facing falkner

Yeah, gen two grass was the hard starter because sprout tower resisted, and the first two gyms countered grass
