Or is the binder smart enough to know that e.g. owning Vildin-Pack Outcast means I also own Dronepack Kindred? If I own both parts of a meld, is it smart enough to know I own 1x of the melded result?

These are separate cards so you need to add both. The other side links to only one front side.

Can you clarify this? Do you mean the app is aware of how to link them, or just the general fact that you should add them in appropriate corresponding numbers?
