Let's say I have Reaper from the Abyss and Meren of Clan Nel Toth on the field and Meren has 6 experience counters. On my opponent's turn s/he kills my Reaper from the Abyss. My turn comes around and I sacrifice a creature then end my turn. I use Meren's ability to bring Reaper back. Does Reaper's effect still kick in even though he wasn't on the field to 'see' the creature die?

No. The demon isn't on the field when it's ability would trigger.
If he came onto the field in say Main Phase 2, it would trigger because it's asking about the state of the game - did a creature die this turn.
