Title: Fake Liliana of the Veils
Post by: Codester1991 on May 29, 2016, 04:45:39 PM
Recently purchased 3 LOTV online off of tcgplayer. Traded one in to a store and got a message today saying it was a fake. They did the LED light test. So now I have two other fake Lilis. Have messaged the store informing them about this and hopefully they refund me my money. If they don't I will get with TCGPlayer directly to see if there's any legal action I can take.

Yep it is getting harder and harder to order anything off of tcg player or eBay with all the fakes roaming around

Yes it's ridiculous at this point. Anyone else have this happen to them?

I've literally never received a fake.

I had Pokemon cards. They came in a pack and everything. No magic cards that I'm aware of.

I would test the other two that you have. Just because one was fake doesn't guarantee the other two are. It could have slipped past the store just like it slipped past you.

So you mentioned that you got a full refund, but what was the response of the store?

Was it an honest mistake or a crap we got caught response.

And did u leave a comment about receiving fake cards from them?

TCGplayer does not sell cards directly as far as I know, they are just a middle man like our community moderators in Free Trade, albeit unlike the community they charge commission. Which shop did you purchase it from?

All three turned out to be fakes. The store was NovaethMTG and he and I spoke personally and he gave me his number so I could send him proof of the LED tests that i did for the cards. Honestly he seemed like a nice guy who had someone pull one over on him but usually people who pull scams are good actors too. So there's no telling if it was intentional or not. He sent me a refund through PayPal and didn't go through tcgplayer for this, but now tcgplayer is wanting him to refund me again through them but I'm going to just have them drop it. The only thing I found funny about his storefront is the only other card he has for sale is a {Jace the mind sculptor} for 80.00.

Well that's suspicious lol

While it is a little fishy, keep in mind he may be a smaller storefront that is just looking to move popular  higher dollar cards to boost the number of cards he is allowed in his inventory. I'm not sure how many sales he has (I haven't checked him out), but in order to post a lot of items on TCG you have to sell a certain amount first. There are 4 tiers, so if he is only in tier one, he can only post 10 items. Like I said, it is a little fishy, but who knows.

He has 5 sales as of now i believe. As I said earlier he seemed like a very nice person that could've just gotten screwed by someone else. But it's one of those things that we'll never know unless someone buys that Jace and tests it to see if it's a fake as well.

I'm more interested in these LED tests. How does it work?

Basically you put the suspected card in front of an LED light if light shines through its real if light doesn't it's fake.

Here's a link to a video that shows it roughly.

Not quite. The light will shine through on some fakes as well but it will not be consistent like a normal magic card. Truthfully it is quite scary because fakes are getting better over time and it is getting harder and harder to tell what is real.

Yes there are some very convincing fakes out there but this test gets most of them. After ripping the undertone of the card was black instead of blue so that was my way of knowing for sure they were fakes.

Thanks, I tried this with my Jaces and they seem to shine through. My problem is, I could not find a fake among my most obvious candidates. Is anyone interested in sharing their fake with me, please? ;]

I would love to have a reference.

I have plenty of fakes as I collect them to teach people at my locals how to tell. If you want I can mail you some if you want to give me your address

I am feArful that I have faked and do not want to check because of plausible deniability.

I would definitely post something on their storefront. Whether it was their fault or not.

How unethical is this. He paid me on the side the 260.00 and now tcgplayer is also making him refund me through them. Would me buying the Jace the mind sculptor off his page with his money to see if it's a fake too then deciding to just be up 520.00 if it's a fake and not pay him back? I mean, it's an eye for an eye and he tried to screw me originally if it was intentional. So basically if the Jace is real I'll pay him back his cash and just be up a Jace but if it's a fake teach him a lesson in scamming

I like it.

If the guy is selling fakes of 100$ cards he definitely deserves it.

You have no idea if that guy got scammed when he obtained the cards himself, so that's unfair.

And on a seller side: they have no protection against people claiming a sale was a fake. They have to just go with the potential punches of getting scammed them self

These statements are why I asked because I myself am a good person and didn't want to do it but at the same time don't like thiefs/bully's/con artists so I thought maybe giving them a piece of their own medicine is somewhat deserved. Also, the chances of there bein 3 fake LOTV and the 1 Jace also being a fake would be pretty convincing evidence against him.

Whoever neg karma-Ed my idea needs to realize there are bad people out there who prey on magic players. I wasn't going to steal from him I was planning on buying another one of his cards and if it was legit he was getting his money back plus 80.00 for the Jace. So he was gaining business. I not flat out stealing I'm trying to prevent the same damn thing that happened to me from happening to someone else.

I don't think your approach is correct. If I were you I would jist contact tcg player and let them handle it. They may have a scam team up their sleeve
