One thing that I can't stand is someone being a douche. So let me explain the scenario.
My friend, another buddy, and myself were a team that would go to modern comps every weekend during modern season for the past two years and we all played at our LGS. Each of us would always come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd consecutively each night at our lgs for FNM everytime literally. Now we never acted douchie, we were nice. We'd help out newer players, I literally remember giving a new player 2 flooded strands for free to help his deck when they got their reprint. Anyways, anything anyone needed wed help regardless and we were humble and kind. About 5-6 months back my friend and myself sold most of our collection and got out of magic for a bit and our other buddy moved 2 hours away, now recently we hit the game again and we are hitting it hard. My friend and myself who sold our collections are now running between us two infect, tron, tokens, UW Control, grixis, wilted Abzan, and zoo. We choose which to run depending on the night. Well all these little assholes we helped out a year ago are now the douchiest people we've ever met. They act like they're on top of the world because they started actually top 8ing. I'm not exaggerating either, they literally think their .poo. don't stink lol. I mentioned today about my friends and I going to compete at the Dallas Open and one dude we used to help more than we can count has the nerve to say "how many people are going to copy us and go." Now it's not something I'd normally get upset about but it was the tone he said it in that bothered me. First of all it's an open, literally open to anyone and everyone. Secondly, we'd been hitting the comps since the dude bought his first pack lol it's ridiculous. Third, we booked hotels for this comp 3 months back before any of them even knew of the damn tourney. These guys attempt to be smug and tell us the decks we have are trash, or theirs are better, or their "team" will wreck us, etc. it literally makes me wish I could turn back the clock and take back all the help that we gave to them. Buuuut I guess knocking them out of top 8 each and every Friday will have to do instead. :)
Just let the ego destroy them, magic is a game of skill but also having fun. I think comp magic makes people forget that others enjoy it too, and it's not just about winning, but also community & player interaction.
Some players I know who've gotten better in skill for standard and draft (taking comp magic very srs) have become much more smug towards my brews and what I enjoy for magic (legacy). Yet my brews have stopped many of them before and forced them to think out of the box (improving their skill). Sometimes I want to give some lip back, but then I remember what I have in the big picture of life: and that's way more than those salty nerds have :)
Those guys will be humbled at big tournaments, and people who visit your lgs from out of town might beat everyone very well one night. It's silly for people to have elitism in geek culture imo, I've also seen people in the magic community very awkward & dismissive towards players who are trans. And it makes me question a lot of players who have probably been ostracized their whole lives and yet they do it to others in their small community that they dominate due to having invested more time/won more games than newer players.
Those people sound younger also codester and young people don't think with a full hand, they just think they have a full hand. Because you know, Internet and learning things they didn't know before :P
I have a smug little .poo. that drafts every Friday at my LGS. He has a snobby attitude and scoffs at binders when they are being passed around because his dad gave him his collection from way back in the day. I'm talking old fetches, at least 5 karakaras(don't know if that is the spelling), bunch of beta, revised, unlimited, legends.. The .loving. nerve of this kid to insert himself into a conversation that has nothing to do with him just to brag and put people down. He even goes up to people mid match and does these snide comments like "that card is terrible. Why are you playing that?" and " If we were playing I'd definitely win." .loving. annoying. It gives me a littl solace knowing that he traded in a fair amount of value to the shop for drafts.

Why do you put up with it. Make sure to let him know he is not welcome when he is a jerk

He's like 12. I can't really tell him off politely, since I'd get an attitude, and I'm not going to lay into him. You learn to put up with it..
Just rob the kid
That will humble his ass
I intimidate the little kids fortunately, so they don't tell me anything. It's actually the guys around my age maybe a few years younger that are the smug ones. I'm a nice guy for the most part but I also come from a small town where you whoop someone's ass for running their mouths then shake their hands after and I'm fixing to introduce that lifestyle to the punks. Lol
Had one guy at my LGS at the prerelease get out in his place. He's usually pretty nice but has a tendency to be over confident and cocky about the quality of his deck (he does the same with standard tournaments). First round he's against me. He gives me the whole "I'll be surprised if you can beat me" deal. 20 minutes later and he's salty I beat him 2-0. Goes on and does the same deal to my friend in the next round. Friend also beat him. Needless to say, he dropped out of the prerelease.
Lol that's hilarious and so satisfying.

I've got a p.i.t.a at my lgs that does draft. Not cocky, just annoying. All the kid does is rare draft. A rare will never go past him. Then his game play is crap and usually loses match in 15 mins. Plays 2 to 3 rounds and drops. Then he sells all the rares he drafts to shop. Won't even sell to people asking to buy it off him for more $. I know one night he got a foil Drana, we new shop was only going to give him like $10 at the time for it, and someone offered him like 12 or 15. The kid said no he won't sell it to anyone. I mean it's good for the shop, but sucks everywhere else!
I havent played much competitively lately (last 15 years lol) but i remember this dude in 1999 small town Brazil (where i grew up and started playing magic) who was the douchiest of them all to me. He befriended one of the top Magic players of the town (who was older and had his own money so he could buy stuff while us 13 year olds were at the mercy of non rich parents; i used to buy a pack a week from saving lunch money lol) and the guy gave him a bunch of cards and built his deck and taught him all things magic. well this dude decided that me and my friends were "tokens" of the magic world. he literaly called us tokens (none of us played tokens lol). So the citys only LGS decided to host a city wide tourney where if you lost a best of 3 your were eliminated and i guess there was no format (i dont know if there were formats back then) and about 100 kids showed up. I played a goblin deck and one of my friends played slivers, and we humbly and surprisinly wrecked everything in our way. My friend eliminated the douchie dude, and I eliminated his brother while he himself was reffing the match (after he was eliminated). My friend placed top 3 and I went on to win the tourny by beating the guy that taugh the douche (who he himself was one of the coolest dudes) and he had to watch everything. Beating the kids that act douchie is the best way to shut them up, and douchiness just gives us extra motivation. Not that we needed his approval or cared about it but he stopped calling us tokens (he called me goblins instead lol). let the douches be douches, the universe always has a way of getting them back for it.
