Title: Ezuri, claw of progress
Post by: JordanCirk on March 23, 2016, 01:05:56 AM
Girlfriend is interested in building this as her first EDH deck, got any helpful tips for this deck? She's fairly new to magic and doesn't need any crazy combos or anything. Beats by ezuri is all she needs! Thank you in advance for any advice!

Well, one of the easiest routes you can go is a ton of value elves.  Things with ETBs or produce mana.  Throw in a {Gyre Sage} along with original {Ezuri, Renegade Leader} for Overrun effects to kill people.  And if you want to include it, {Sage of Hours}

 {Ezuri, Claw of Progress}

I agree with Remillo lots of little elves and heroic guys.  {Crowned Ceratok} is fun.  {Tuskguard Captain} pretty much the same as the Ceratok and  {Longshot Squad} will help with the pesky flyers

Don't forget morph creatures get you those experience counters too ;)
(Though this might be too fancy combo)
Things like {Sagu Mauler},  {Deathmist Raptor}, even  {Krosan Cloudscraper} can give counters as they enter, then flip and be huge.

I don't know if I'd do the morph route for her, but it would be interesting. She doesn't really care for a lot of "crazy" interactions and it would be easier for her to just simply smash face if that makes sense

Makes sense. The raptor could still be great as smash-face card.

You can try and drop the fun evolve creatures. Some fun spells would be anything that spawns small tokens like  {Avenger of Zendikar} and  {Garruk Relentless}. A fun and cheap spell is  {Bioshift}. Great spell with heroic.

Heroic really is not good with ezuri. The only good one is {sage of hours}. And that because you can get 4+ exp counters, with ezuri on the field. Play the sage giving you 5+ counters. Then put 5 counters on the sage. Then remove them with his abiltiy to gain an extra turn. Rinse and repeat next turn. You have infinate turns until everyone concides, someone kills the sage some how, or you beat faces till you win the game. I highly suggest it as it is an easy two card combo that you can use to teach her about infinate combos.

That said, I find most good and imo fun ezuri decks fall into one of two categories or pick some of both.
You have ezuri "big and wide" this version is about token spam, with things like {avenger of zendikar} as prplprince meantioned. It is a basic wide deck where the goal is to swarm your enemy with so many attackers they can't block them all. Ezuri helps by each turn buffing one member fo the swarm into a large threat. Forcing them to pick between picking off weak creatures or sacrificing their creatures to stop the big threats.

Next is ezuri "quality over quantity" this version picks individual creatures which do things when they/or other creatures have +1/+1 counters, or are utility creatures which still give expiriemce counters. {Sage of hours} as remillo orginally meantioned falls into this category. Other examples include {solemn simulacrum} a card played for the useful effects becomes better by also giving experience ,or {hooded hydra} who you can build into a big threat that when killed makes a large number of tokens. (There is a squid with the same effect in blue, just don't remember the name)

I believe the card you are thinking of is {chasm skulker}.

Yup, thank you very much. Another example of a quality creature is {blighted agent} if not removed he can quickly take out your enemies.
