Hey all! I'm thinking of starting a series to debate and discuss hot button topics.I want to hear people's options on polarizing subject matter. The first one is with regards to the card {Triumph of Ferocity}. WotC has been taking some heat for the depiction of something reminiscent of domestic violence. This card is one of a paired set, the other being Liliana's overpowering of Garruk in {Triumph of Cruelty}.
Thoughts?
people always find something to complain about, if you switched lilliana with a male or reversed their positions there wouldn't be any complaints.
Dumb, I get the whole, guy choking girl about to tell her how it really is, dilemma, but how is this different than any other media showing a guy hitting/killing/raping another girl, or even a girl do the same to a guy. Is it because kids have access to the cards without being carded for purchase, so again here we are at a place where a company is having to tell parents how to better raise their child, I'm assuming children are the cause of the argument, because of an adult has a problem with this picture, they should return to the rock they've been under for the past 30+ years. If I were R. Garfield I would make a set called Un-censored, and have cards that have racy names, and artwork, and then have them all censored (as to mock the latest moral dilemma), heck the media does it, music artists do it, why shouldn't magic. Hasbro is not small business, and will not likely stand around and be a scapegoat.
I think it would be borderline if it were not apparent that the girl was armed.
Out of context causes loads of problems.
There is an article on this in the website robot viking

I understand this point but, if you take most anything out of context it's going to be misunderstood. However in most forms of media hen some one is manhandling a women the guy is the "bad guy". Now I'm not as versed on my lore but I don't think Garruk is the evil one here.

I'm sorry. I find it ridiculous that people will pull anything out of context. Like DV when it's guy on girl but not the other way around.

I wish it wasn't the case but since I first saw it I thought it would be a touchy subject. I actually like it because it captures the characteristics of the two so well, especially Garruk, but like Proph said, outta context makes it 😳
People complain about it cause they dont know what is all happening. I grew up learning u dont hit a woman, even if she hits u. But the moment she picks up a weapon, be it a gun knife or even a pan she has put herself in a mans position and its fair game then.
It's two planeswalker fighting and tryin to over power and to see who's the stronger planeswalker nothing more, they aren't your parents or your friends whom might be dealing with a domestic violence issues they are an artist rendering of two power houses tryin to show who's got the biggest guns and I know younger ppl who play and I know older ppl who play and I doubt any of them will see this card and go hey it's okay to beat my gf/wife cause my magic card shows it -.-
She shoulda made him a sandwich
I'd like BJ's opinion on the different cards and imagery in Magic that might lead some more conservative parents and adults to see Magic as a kind of devil-ey influence on their kids and stuff. when I was younger my mom saw a blue-black control deck I was trying to build with a Zombie theme and was very much apalled, and I couldn't seem to get it across to her that they were just cards.
