so Me and a few friends are doing a goofy tribal game in which we try to build theme decks around a random subtype. I won't know what i will but up against except someone will be doing wolves. (We each put one type into a hat and then everyone drew).
I got curses.
There are 16 curses if i go five color and i have it to theme so could you guys give me some help with this cause with this few cards i am struggling to start.
arcane spells and spirits are pretty themed with curses. So are witches.
Synonyms:
anathema, ban, bane, blaspheming, blasphemy, commination, cursing, cuss word, cussing, damning, denunciation, dirty name, dirty word, double whammy, execration, expletive, four-letter word, fulmination, imprecation, malediction, malison, naughty words, no-no, oath, objuration, obloquy, obscenity, profanation, profanity, sacrilege, swear word, swearing, vilification, whammy,
Synonyms: cursing, disrespectful, godless, impious, insulting, irreligious, profanatory, profane, sacrilegious, swearing, ungodly
abuse, cursing, cussing, desecration, execration, heresy, impiety, impiousness, imprecation, indignity, lewdness, profanation, profaneness, profanity, reviling, sacrilege, scoffing, scurrility, swearing, vituperation
All these are different kinds of words that revolve around the word "curse". Some notable ones right off the bat (that I can think of) are: desecration ({Desecration Demon}), profanity ({Profane Command}), damning ({Damnation}), and blasphemy ({Blasphemis Act}).
From what it looks like (and what I think of when I hear "curse") I feel the commander will be mainly black and possibly red or blue. It feels like these colors are the ones that will mainly have this type of effect. I'll look for a commander that seems to fit this discription, but as far as creatures, demons, witches, sorcerers, Devils all seem to fit. Hope this helps a little!
{Kaervek the Merciless} and {Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch} seem to fit it best for the theme of the deck.
{King Macar, the Gold-Cursed} would be very fitting for the deck now that I think about it... He seems like the best choice if you go monoblack
Don't forget {Bitterheart Witch}
Maybe we should first look at all the curses and make a game plan before choosing a commander.
First off i want to thank you guys alot for all the help so far, please keep it coming.
Now for the meat of this post: curses!
White
{Curse of Exhaustion}
{Curse of the Forsaken}
Blue
{Curse of Echoes}
{Curse of Inertia}
{Curse of the Bloody Tome}
Black
{Curse of Death's Hold}
{Curse of Misfortunes}
{Curse of Oblivion}
{Curse of Shallow Graves}
{Curse of Thirst}
Red
{Curse of Bloodletting}
{Curse of Chaos}
{Curse of Stalked Prey}
{Curse of the Nightly Hunt}
{Curse of the Pierced Heart}
Green
{Curse of Predation}
This the 16 subtyped curses. There are other "curse" cards but they target creatures arifacts or are passive enchantments, but they do fit the theme.

Don't forget {Bitterheart Witch}
A must have, black is easily a color we must run and she is perfect for the deck.

I like him but I think he will be one of the 99 as mono color gives 5 "true curses" max.
For now I would like to focus on card ideas and discussion on what colors to play.
I feet like black is a must play color cause of misfortune and thirst curse.
I've done some contemplating over the theme & the curses. The first thing I'd think is some sort of inverted pillowfort build, using curses to entice opponents to kill each other instead of you.

Now for the meat of this post: curses!
White
{Curse of Exhaustion} - can combo into a lock, yet draws a lot of hate because of that.
{Curse of the Forsaken} - gain 1 life seems meh.
Blue
{Curse of Echoes} - very versatile. Double up counterspells, buffs, spot removal..
{Curse of Inertia} - this will open the enchanted player right up.
{Curse of the Bloody Tome} - Mill two each upkeep? Not worth it.
Black
{Curse of Death's Hold} - can be very powerful or just a nuisance depending on the reliance on small/utility creatures.
{Curse of Misfortunes} - YES. Tutor curses.
{Curse of Oblivion} - Exile two cards from the grave seems even worse than milling two.
{Curse of Shallow Graves} - Really nice effect for the pillowfort idea.
{Curse of Thirst} - synergy damage, works nice in my 60 in 1v1, but I don't think it's strong enough for commander.
Red
{Curse of Bloodletting} - Fits the pillowfort theme very well. Expect the enchanted player to die really fast though.
{Curse of Chaos} - this option will also encourage your opponents to attack the enchanted player. Could be they'll start digging for answers to you, though.
{Curse of Stalked Prey} - also a great encourager.
{Curse of the Nightly Hunt} - It will open a fortified player up, needs backup though, to prevent the creatures coming at you.
{Curse of the Pierced Heart} - ping for 1 each turn seems too minor.
Green
{Curse of Predation} - great pillowfort card.
Bottom line, you'll want {B} & {R} for this build, and then you can either go {U} or {G} I'd think.
{G} gives you predation and Garruk's curse in {Garruk, Apex predator}'s emblem, and access the the enchantresses effects (aka card draw).
{U} gives you more control options, {propaganda} and bounce.
If you find you lack defense despite the curses, {W} would become the third color. That would also allow for enchantment recursion and flickering.
A great flavor cycle to include would be the {bogbrew witch}.
I think the 2 that would mostly follow the "theme" to be the commander and are all colors are {Reaper King} and {Karona, False God}
I am Kinda feeling Blue, Black, Red as it is a favorite of mine plus would give me access to {nicol bolas, planeswalker}. And we all know how much Nicol enjoys a good curse or two for his enemies. But five color also provides me with the full range of curses, green mana ramp, and white has some of the best enchantments for pillowfort in the game.

I am leaning towards thrax as he seems like the better finisher if i need to go beat down to finish the game. Plus he takes out a creature just by attacking
I feel like {Stab Wound} is very appropriate. Spells like that in general. "Cursing" your opponents creatures. If you go blue you get tap down enchantments which are amazing for locking down commanders.
You could also go for subtheme: cards that make your opponents curse.
