{Haakon, Stromgald Scourge} long was impossible to cast as commander. With the new {command beacon} you can get him into your hand, then discard and cast him. As he dies, you just cast him from the yard again, not using the optional replacement to return him to the command zone.
There is one small issue: his second ability lets you do a recurring knights tribal. Yet the knights are not THAT spectacular. So I'm thinking of using {conspiracy} to make ALL creatures knights.
Now I'm looking for black creatures to keep casting over and over. Any suggestions?
{Gray Merchant of Asphodel}, {Massacre Wurm}, {Grave Titan}, I'll come up with some more later! There are some impressive knights as well, {Eastern Paladin} and {Phyrexian Crusader} off the top of my head.
Also, you will need ALOT of tutors for the deck to make that happen with the land. And stuff like {Crucible of Worlds} incase he gets exiled.

Yeah, luckily mono black has plenty of tutors. When I have it all, things get interesting.
Even figured out a neat trick: {blood pet} goes infinite with Haakon + conspiracy.
Agree Eastern + Western Pally are pretty sweet, but most Knights are best vs white, but otherwise meh.
Don't forget {Nameless Inversion}. Haakon lets you cast it from the graveyard.

I totally missed that, but you're right. Knight cards he says, so any tribal knight (and shapeshifter) spells as well. Nice catch!

How would {blood pet} go infinite here?Haakon doesn't say "you may cast knights without paying their mana cost." Just that you can cast them from the yard.

He says play. Not cast.

7/15/2006 : While Haakon is in your graveyard, you may cast it. This follows the normal rules and timing for casting a creature spell; the only difference is what zone Haakon is being cast from. The spell goes on the stack. You have to pay Haakon's mana cost and any applicable additional costs. The same applies for Knight cards you cast from your graveyard while Haakon is on the battlefield.
Ah I just read the card. I didn't look into rulings.
Not infinite mana, Infinite (grave)storm count/etb/die triggers however....
cast {blood pet}, sac for {B}, use mana to cast. Rinse & repeat.
Follow up with {bitter ordeal} to exile all libraries, or {tendrils of agony} to drain.
As to the earlier discussion on wording:
The definitions of play:
Play: 1. To play a land is to put a land onto the battlefield as a special action. See rule 115, "Special Actions," and rule 305, "Lands."
2. To play a card is to play that card as a land or cast that card as a spell, whichever is appropriate. See rule 601, "Casting Spells."
3. (Obsolete) Casting a spell used to be known as playing a spell. Cards with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Cast.
4. (Obsolete) Activating an activated ability used to be known as playing an activated ability. Cards with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Activate.
5. (Obsolete) The battlefield used to be known as the in-play zone. Cards that were printed with text that contains the phrases "in play," "from play," "into play," or the like are referring to the battlefield and have received errata in the Oracle card reference. See Battlefield.
