Title: Question of the week:
Post by: JordanCirk on November 10, 2015, 12:09:28 PM
What are your favorite commanders and why?

I will go ahead and start by saying  {Sidisi, Brood Tyrant} will forever and always be my favorite commander. My deck is tribal zombies, with so many ways to win! Beat down by zombies, drain everyone with {Gray Merchant of Asphodel}, fling {Lord of Extinction} at everyone with {Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord}, mill everyone with {Rooftop Storm} + {Gravecrawler} + {Altar of Dementia}, the list just goes on. It's a hilariously fun deck to play and everytime I play it reminds me why I love sultai so much'

I've had a lot of decks. My five colour has been an evolving beast over the years and yet still, no 5-colour legend really fits the theme. Still hoping for that 5-colour angel M.R. Said they would print...eventually... I've built Uril, derevi, ghave, chromium, and more but none of them really called to me. Except one. {Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury}. I started playing in ice age block. A lot of cards referenced Freyalise and the mystery captivated me. When they printed her, I instantly bought the box and loaded the deck with all my mana dorks and big beasties an I've never looked back. This deck has it all. Card draw, mana ramp, and more than a few tricks up the proverbial sleeves. And although I've played with the mana base and added a few newer cards as they're printed (origins nissa and Dwynen, I'm looking at you) the deck is still basically unchanged and really fun to play with.

That's awesome! She's a really sweet commander! Do you have a deck list at all? It would be fun to see what you have! :)

Don't you know that hiding cards in your sleeves is considered cheating? ;)

My favorite commander, that's hard to say.
I've been building virtual lists to play around with for a while now, and so many commanders are great to build with. Almost every legend has a theme that calls out once I read the card, grasp the flavor. To me, that's the magic of commander.
My babies are the two decks I built myself: {Kurkesh, onakke ancient} & {krenko, mob boss}. Another commander I built a great themed deck with, is  {Ben-Ben, Akki Hermit} (which I should revise with some awaken cards actually), with the theme of death by mountains. I could go on forever. Bottom line: commander is great!

So far my all time favorite commander to play is by far Animar.   A close 2nd would be Dareti and azami wizards tribal deck.   All pretty sweet.

{Kozilek, the butcher of Truth}

I love this deck. Casting him on turns 2 or 3 and playing 4v1 EDH is some of the most fun I've ever had.

And I win a good portion of those games as well.

My all time favorite has to be {Sydri, Galvanic Genius}. It's such a versatile combo deck. It's resilient and extremely fun to play. I also have {Darien, King of Kjeldor} soldier tribal, {Ezuri, Renegade Leader} elf tribal, {Mirri the Cursed} voltron, {Ertai, Wizard Adept} control, and {The Mimeoplasm} re-animator. I honestly love to play them all. I'm also working on {Krenko, Mob Boss} to complete my mono-colored plans.

Have you ever seen {Ancestral Statue}? It goes infinite with Animar insanely fast!

My first ever commander was mimeoplasm! He's a great volt ton commander, and whenever he became a {Stormtide Leviathan} he seemed unstoppable.

On the note of Mirri, do you happen to have a list? She's always a commander I've been interested In and even thought about building her green version as well!

In fact, blue is by far my "worst" color when it comes to playing. Though I appreciate its power, I'm also reluctant to go: "nah, counter".

If you like stax you should check out {Kaervek the merciless}. Built a list, and it does make you think about what you cast opposing it.

I've built about 12 different decks and I've dismantled 10 of them for one reason or another. The two I've kept are  {Rafiq of the Many} And  {Sen Triplets} And depending on my mood either is great

Rafiq is a unblockable, exhalted, infect deck with an ability to kill three players a turn

Triplets is a aggressive control strategy able to steal opponents cards from almost anywhere except exile and command zone

My two TL decks are  {Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest} And  {Varolz, the Scar-Striped} Both are aggressive strategies but varolz can kill turn 3 with the right hand lol

Rafiq is a pretty nasty commander. Have you thought about the new Ezuri as your commander and dropping white? Or even adding him to your deck? Ezuri seems insane

My current favorite is my  {Sliver Overlord} Toolbox deck just because you can combo to win or swarm or commander damage... Every game is different!

Another one that's creeping up the ranks of my commander deck has to be my  {Roon of the Hidden Realm} Blink deck. Etb creatures and just lolz around. The secret behind the deck is while everyone is trying to deal with the more powerful early game decks you land an  {Acidic Slime} or another abusive etb creature and all of a sudden the game locks down and only my deck is still functioning.

Narset. You win out of nowhere.
I've seen your list, seems like it can win daily consistantly! How do you deal with effects like {Moat} or {Island Sanctuary}?

In the case of {island sanctuary} you can just attack another player, {moat} would be harder I recon. Suggestion: win before they land it?

Or counter it. Or draw cyclonic rift.
Gotcha. I only ask because there are a few stax/heavy control decks within my field (me being known for Staxy type decks).

Besides that narset is probably the most broken if not closest to broken 1v1 commander

I have quite a few decks but my favorite is {omnath, locus of mana} "going green" deck. All the mana ramp plus ways to give him flash. As long as he has flash nothing can kill him. Because with a 400 point mana pool who cares if he has died a dozen times. I'll just pay the ~27 mana to recast him. Besides, eot i will just add another 100+

{Norin, the Wary} is heaps of fun.

The new Sphinx from C15 is silly.

And Just coz no one has said it yet, {Zur the Enchanter} is fun to play, not against. Haha.
