Title: Simic
Post by: Noblellama on October 19, 2015, 06:30:26 PM
My friends and I were having a debate/problem
while we have many decks that are viscous, some that are just plain fun, others that are odd, we have encountered a problem.

not one of us is happy with any of the simic decks we have..

Can we get some discussion and ideas about what you have done for a {G}{U} deck that turned out fun or competitive?

Restrictions:
60 card deck
{U}{G} ONLY (no splash 3rd color for Bant/Temur/Sultai)
semi recent (limited access to cards older than 4+ years old)
keep it affordable (don't suggest 4 Jace Vrynn Prodigy and 4 Snapcaster mages in the same deck etc...)
give me a run down on what the deck does conceptually

I had assembled a deck but never followed through on tweaks to make it very functional because I was missing cards I thought would be important. It basically strived to get you as many extra turns as possible; mainly with {sage of hours} and good heroic creatures to constantly hit with more +1/+1's. Then just fog/counters for control.
I think it broke a little because I tried too much flavor over functionality. Like {living lore} grabbing a discarded {temporal trespass}.
I'm sure there's something there, I just didn't spend time on it

Mainly utilizing Proliferate via {Thrumming Bird} and the various {Sporesower Thallid} type cards

I always loved it

{mycoloth} sounds like a good fit in there

{U}/{G} Superfriends.

{Doubling Season}

{Jace, Architect of Thought}

Jace into Jace into Jace into Jace into {Ugin, the Spirit Dragon} into GG.

The pre go off plan is varied from {Garruk, Wildspeaker} value ramp to turbo frog to {Fog Bank}.

Technically it will be {U}{G} even though the mana base supports all colors you can do the turbo fog/control  {Maze's End} deck. Mana leaks, remands, fogs and such. Run some  {Amulet of Vigor}s and you may have a deck. Not the best deck but fun and not mainstream

Want to be vicious?  Blue Green infect :D as far as more fun do an evolve beat down deck like deliver  experiment one and tempo cards

Honestly that maybe the best deck for {U}{G}. I think the most expensive cards would be the shocks and fetches.

This basically is asking for a budget casual deck. There's no way you get competitive and budget casual in the same boat. The fact you can't use expensive cards also makes this a weak restriction. Some of the best blue cards are quite expensive, then within the last 4 years, the game has evolved poorly, especially for those colors

Fog into krakens seems pretty viable

Im not saying budget, im just saying we are not trying to build decks that have $400-$800 price tags
hell, most of us use gain lands in favor of shock lands to PREVENT the escalation into those expensive monstrosities.
we enjoy playing the game of kitchen table magic, not the game of "take a measurable % of your yearly income and throw it at cardboard"

we have expensive cards, there are ugins and gideons, even a few SF mystics hopping around so im not saying we are broke, we just are not looking to throw down huge payouts to buy the "newest hotness", we are looking for IDEAS

I do agree that blue seems to be expensive, mostly due to legacy players and the control aspect of the game

I also agree with you that the last few years have not been kind to these colors, a few good cards here and there but no synergy, and poor green just is always last to get good cards...

as for fogging into krakens, why not fog into huge green creatures and then you don't need blue?

Because winning with kiora is boner town and it hits your guidelines

Plasm capture into aetherling was an amazing combo that usually ended the game early

Hell

Fog/dispel into biovisionary wins

Also if you included older cards - food chain and mistvale griff. Very strong combo, cast an eldrazi in no time with counters to backup any dispels or enchant killers

Ok, just spitballing as i am at work so can't look up cards, so coming up with this off the top of my head, gonna start simple with a 9x4 deck

Best way i can think of protecting kiora is by discouraging attacks and summoning threats that have to be dealt with to make people use burn/removal on them rather then kiora.
{kiora, MoD} duh
{kiora, tCW} duh

{Giant adaphage} a threat that makes nore threats, plus in mulitiplayer there should be someone you can make babies off of.
{managorger hydra} this thing might start small but can grow every quickly in a multiplayer game.

{Hier of wilds}
{sledge scoripion}
If buget allows {deathmist raptor}
Ah deathtouch, the quintessential "don't touch me" affect. Nice for discouraging early aggro, plus kiora MoD's ultimate makes them into "destory target creature" spells.

{monastery siege} dig for kiora or discourage targeting your stuff by making it more expensive. Both seem nice.
{treasure cruise}, siege does a nice job preping this and {U} for 3 cards can be nice. We don't really need dig as most of our stuff should always be useful.

{fog} I don't see this as a great card for this deck but it could be useful for poltics, swinging people to your side after saving them.

My quicky built kiora deck

{Kiora master of the depths} 3
{kiora the crashing wave} 3
{giant adaphage} 2
{managorger hydra} 4
{heir of the wilds} 4
{sledge scorpion} 4
{deathmist raptor} 4
{monastery siege} 4
{treasure cruise} 4
{explosive vegatation} 2
{bident of thassa} 2
Lands 24- what you can afford

I added the explosive vegatation as a way to filter out some land plus mana ramp to adaphage and the bidents as a secondary draw affect plus flavor.

What do yall think?

Edit to fix kioras not linking right.

I always loved the idea of {vorel the hull clade} and {kioras follower}. Throw a counter onto an {elusive krasis} and have fun. Or {gyre sage}, for just poop tons of mana. Make a lot for a massive {biomass mutation} I think the card is?  But for Kiora, either one, have a {gilder bairn} as well as a {paradise mantle} so you can hit that ultimate real quick.
