Title: Soulbond as a viable mechanism
Post by: Dudecore2012 on April 26, 2012, 11:20:35 PM
What is everyone's opinion of soulbond? I am personally pretty high on this right now, i can't wait to brew up some decks. The drawbacks I see are.
1) Maybe not enough cards are using the mechanic currently.
2) WotC might abandon it if it proves unpopular. Also if it becomes too difficult for the casual player to enjoy.
3) Potential to become broken, with its interactions with current fatties.

It also seems like a nice bridge to Ravnica and those guild interactions. Shares interaction with blink, and I enjoy the strategy of binding creatures and making those tough choices.

I like to see how it plays. I do think that these are all the bonding cards we are going to see for a while, until they decide to bring it back.

Like {Elgaud Shieldmate} + anything? I feel like we'll be seeing it for awhile, specifically to protect {Sun Titan} from removal/destruction until rotation pulls the titans.

You can even use {birds of paradise} for blue mana to protect {primeval Titan}, or instead use the murder factory {Wolfir Silverheart}.

Yea, honestly {wolfir silverheart} can add 12 to your power platform. I can see that being sick in a {birthing pod} or a good ramp deck. I mean the crazy thing about soulbond is the fact that you can pair it with any unpaired creature. Hell it makes a bird all crazy. I was sure they were gonna make a soulbond with a "both creature have tap for any color of mana" ability, I thought that would be for sure, but I guess not

10/10 Trample {Primeval Titan}, 8/8 wolf. Wolf run? Goodnight.

I really like it for double soulbound. Like putting elgaud shieldmate with Wolfir silver heart. Two big ol hex proof fatties.

If you're worried about its reception, it's just that if a new ability doesn't affect turn one and two, people don't care. General long term magic players seem to be pretty shallow. Like I'm really excited for {Soul of the Harvest} for that art. There's a million reasons and applications to be excited about in magic and that's the beauty.

I really like {silverblade paladin} and the double strike he gives, put that with a titan....or with a creature equipped with a sword of WaP.....

I have a feeling that soulbond is not going to make it big in the Pro Tours. I personally like it, but it's risky and inconsistent. Spikes like to know what to expect from their cards. Variability is harder to plan around. Just like Werewolves.

Let's say you cast {Grave Titan}. You know that you are getting a 6/6 deathtoucher and two 2/2s. Everytime.

If you swing with on of a pair, then they pull a trick on you, they can take out one creature and nerf a second.
