Title: BFZ, Hype, Complaints, etc.
Post by: bravado883 on September 28, 2015, 03:42:39 PM
As you may all know, I LOVE the new set. I think it has so much flavor, and it's been a while since a set has got my mind as brewy as this one has. However, I know a lot of people feel otherwise. Anyway, I thought this was a particularly good article that sort of echoes my feelings and sentiments about the set:

http://www.starcitygames.com/article/31633_The-Battle-For-Battle-For-Zendikar.html

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I thought it'd be cool to hear the arguments from the "set's good" side as well as the "set's bad" side.

Ingest common 1/2 drops are insanely powerful

I kept my opponents board clear at prerelease and kept ingesting all of their critical land

I see those commons in constructed play, little baby Ashioks coming at you

I hate BFZ. Haven't played minutes so I can't speak for that but the lack of reprints, the overall low power level, and bad mechanics leave me bitter. Plus the expeditions piss me off because it's just a money grab by wizards.

While boxes are a little more expensive than usual, the hype surrounding the set and its likelihood as the most opened set in history will likely result in singles with lower prices than we're used to.

I haven't seen a place that has them more $. All my lgs kept them the same..  If your lgs jacked the price up, sorry to hear that and  I'd buy elsewhere.  I  got a box for $90 and a fat pack for $35.

"Money grab by wizards" is one of the worst arguments ever. Wizards is a company. Companies require money to run. Wizards puts in expeditions so they get more money and can do things like hire better MODO programmers, pay non-RnD members better, and overall have more money to insure that magic continues well into the future. Printing any set can be described as a "money grab". Alpha until BFZ have all been money grabs and that's nota bad thing.

Any company's base purpose is profits (excluding charities which aren't /really/ companies anyway). WotC wouldn't exist if it didn't make money. That is a fact. People that like Magic but hate WotC for trying to make money confuse me. That's WotC's goal, it has to be.

People are really hype about expeditions. I don't logically understand why somebody would dislike them except for personally disliking their aesthetics or not being able to afford them. Ask yourself. If you crack one and it's not a lag land, will you complain? Then why are you complaining? Because there's super cool lands that Wizards is making money off of? Nobody bitches about Unhinged full art lands or Zendikar/BFZ full art lands. Think about it. Somebody is going to crack one and turn it into funds to get into Modern, or towards an EDH deck. Or be happy to have it. Who cares? They're playing magic! Why on earth should you be mad about more people buying more magic?

Understanding this from a marketing and consumer perspective, people just like to bitch.

Okay then what if say they were mad because it's going to drive the overall cost of staples down because of the mass purchasing, some of us rather enjoy trading and flipping cards, it's nearly impossible to do when this set is bought out and drives everything to a nickel

This standard format will be Khans Block plus Origins and new lands. Sure some cards will see play but power level is lower than Theros ... Sure rhino dominates but mantis rider and DTT are just as good (if not better). The sad thing is that WotC is making std weaker by not reprinting {Lightning Strike} or {Elvish Mystic} bc they're "too powerful" (which is bogus)

Idk I highly dislike BFZ but I hope that I'm wrong.

BUT the limited format was sweet I had a blast at the Pre Release

But that's an archetype by eliminating mystic and strike they are killing aggro. As a control player Im "happy" that they are slowing it down but cmon dorks aren't too good for standard (except for BoP and Hierarch}

I'm all for Wizards making money. I'm all for that. But the thing about BFZ is that instead of making a good set that people would want to buy to get staples and good reprints, people now buy the set to chase after cards that they probably will never get, and we are left with a crappy set instead. That is what pisses me off.

So formats are more accessible and more people play magic? And I'm supposed to be mad about people gambling on MTG Finance losing money? Part of the gamble. Besides, these aren't going to do much to normal shocks and fetches. Only the richest will be swapping thier playersets. Honestly doesn't confront me, and people should be happy at the prospect of grabbing now and selling later.

Not much of a gamble.. You just don't buy the set.. The cards are bad.. When cards are bad you don't buy a set.. Look at journey to nyx, dragons maze, dark Ascension...

Just dont.. If I want cards I'll buy singles at best and trade for whatever else.. The only packs I open will be prize/limited pool poop
