Title: Custom magic variation.
Post by: redwolv on August 12, 2015, 01:43:00 PM
So a friend and I have been messing around with this idea of making a way to play magic in a way where you, as a planeswalker grow and develop with each battle, even having some battles go as far as "scarring" you so at the start of battles you may start with less cards in hand or the enemy gets a free 3/3 beast turn 2. While we have most of the rules more or less established we need to now find a few things to help bring this game mode into effect. Basicly programs/websites to accomplish some different tasks.

First off a playing format is easy- we like cockatrice.
But what we neeed is this.

A way to "open" card packs. Particularly make "custom" packs like. "Any card vintage legal, but will only be blue colored, and will have X of each rarity." "Any one planeswalker" the more we can tweak and make special "packs" the better.

Program for easily making/modifying cards. As we will have a handful of custom cards. If it can be a live feed so as i change something the other person can see/also be changing stuff that would be great plus.

Some kinda of "my card collection" program. Keep track of what cards you have, highly perfer to have strong card sorting/filtering options. (We will probably have times where we change 30+ cards between one fight and the next)

I appreciate the help. Also if anyone is interested in seeing the rules and stuff i can post a rough version of the rules today and an updated version once have it is done.

Edit-change topic name to better suit topic.

Totally interested. I've seen custom cards in untap.in but I don't know how to do it. I use a program called MtG set editor. You can make your own sets and cards there, complete with artwork if you can get artwork. You could also crack packs, if you made a set of the possible cards. I don't know if you can modify rarities from the standard rarities in MtG. You could also track cards by making sets of them and it has a solid sorting feature.

Rules would be super cool. :3

I have a more clear and updated set of rules, some of which still need tweaking/balancing but here was the rough starting idea i sent to my friend.

Rules for planes walking.
Pick one of 5 custom monocolored walkers. Each comes with a basic monocolored deck.

This walker is you. He does not reside in the deck like normal walkers. His abilities are not loyalty ability but 3 spells you can always cast but only one can use one per turn. Each ability has a mana cost.

Win or lose each game rewards you a "pack" of random new cards. You can pick:
Colored pack- will only have cards of the picked color.(worse odds/no chance at mythic but holds more cards, good early way to help build a base for building your deck)

Set pack- will only have cards from that set. (Normal odds)

Gold pack- five rares picked from all sets. (best chance at hitting general value cards. Remeber the odds of a rare being replaced with mythic is about 1/8)

Wining gives you two packs, lose gives you one pack. Winning gives access to the fourth "pack"
Friend pack- use your two packs up instead to find a friend. (Give one of the games many planeswalkers, normal packs will have 0 chance at walkers)

You only need to get a card once to run as many copies as permitted. So for example finding one {master of waves} would let you play 4 in a normal deck.

Gaining a walker is not just a solid card you could add to your deck. When you get one you can pick one loyalty ability they have for them to teach you. Turning it into an equipable skill with a mana cost like your starting ones. You can then switch it with one of your other abilities between games. This also changes your own coloring.

Say you started as a green walker and befriend elspeth. Learning and Equiping her soldier ability will make you white green. Learning bolas ultimate and equipping it would make you GUBR in coloring.

You can never abandon your starting color so pick wisely. You also can not run white cards if your a green walker unless you equip a white ability. Kinda like a commanders color determines their deck, your color determines your deck.

As I will be playing as the enemy decks against my friend but still wanted the fun of building an tweaking my own character, so this last bit was added.

After 5 games you will face your rival in a duel. This rival will have "won and lost" duels like you. so each time you face them they will have evolved just like you. And will also have their own personal skills to use, unlike the normal enemy decks.

Please Remember this is just the rough edges. I'll post a finished rules when i get home later tonight as they are on my conputer.

This sounds pretty cool, but also might get shot down by wizards.

Ah. I thought you were creating a website with support for a game like this. My apologies.

No no not at all. I am just looking for website an programs suggestions so we could do this. Cause we can't come up with a way to open the packs, etc. right now the only idea is some kinda excel spread sheet with every card plus a random number generator+ some kinda  way to eatablish rarity of each card. and that would just be a pain to set up.

This sounds really awesome! MtG set editor should fit your needs perfectly.

Thanks. We have also been kicking around some kinda perk/passive/leveling thing where you can get perks at the start of the game. Like white walker would be able to over time increase there starting life total/ get a soldier buddy. Green can start with a land on the field and a few turns in get a free beast. Blue increased starting hand. But have not found a way of implamentation we like as we want it to also be a growing thing like the walker skills and card pools

Levels and skill points? That could work.

I can understand that. Maybe they'd be like achievements? Kill = XP. Not taking damage = XP. Could be all kinds of cool stuff.

I like it. Maybe add xp gaining things only come if your anspecfic color? Green gets it for killing creatures, blue for countering spells? If both colors you get both exp providers. Will chat with the others see what they think.
