Title: Ruling on Darien/Trostani combo regarding killing damage
Post by: Dbrowning on July 22, 2015, 08:29:53 PM
Was playing commander with my trostani deck when we came across a dispute over the oracle text with Darien king of kjeldor.

Both Trostani and Darien were in play. I had 17 life and my opponent dealt 18 damage to me with 3 creatures attacking.

Would the damage have killed me as one hit for the 18 damage, or would Darien's soldiers pumped out as I took the damage activating Trostani's life gain ability?

Thanks!

you would die. you take the damage, then Darien's ability is put on the stack. once his ability resolves, the soldiers enter (triggering Trostani's ability). so you are dead long before you will gain the life.

 {Trostani, Selesnya's Voice}
{Darien, King of Kjeldor}
For reference.
And BlackyChen is absolutely right.
Even if you would have a triggered ability saying: "whenever you get damage, gain that much life" (as a triggered ability), it would not save you, as state based actions see you at/below 0 before you would receive priority to put the ability on the stack.
