Title: How you started playing Magic
Post by: Coolie2 on July 01, 2015, 07:52:25 PM
ive played magic for like four years now, having started around the time of Avacyn Restored, With one of my first decks coming from the Knights part of the Knights v Dragons duel deck at the time. (Sad I didn't see the price jump coming :P) a few of my first mythics came from these times with my first planeswaker, Jace, coming from a premade deck I think and my first mythic ever, Akroma's Memorial, coming from a booster pack that came in a deck builder's toolkit (I think) after a few duel decks and premade decks along with deck builders tool kits, I had a decent (in my opinion at the time) deck that beat my brother (who didn't know any more than me) this deck was an ugly combination of colors consisting of cards that I liked, which ended up giving me a 120 card deck. Although I played a bit at my summer camp, I dropped magic for a while until just last summer. I had remembered Magic when my brother reminded me. I was feverishly looking for me 120 card deck (still no smarter sadly...) and my collection. I couldn't find it for summer camp but I convinced my brother to use his cards to build myself a deck. I've played constantly ever since then. I build a 100 card deck that summer, eventually trimming it to 60. When the summer ended, I started going to my local magic store, which I had just learned about, looking to become better. Even nought I had become much better at camp, I wanted to use the very best cards I originally had in that 120 card deck such as Akroma's Memorial to make a new Master Deck. I built up my deck slowly, eventually making what I currently have now. I remade the deck I had last summer a little while ago along with a blue deck that includes Jace, my first and favorite Planeswalker :D. Now that's my Magic Story... What's your's?

Cool. What's your personnel opinion on planeswalkers cause this person from my camp who played since the beginning doesn't like the newer block system or planeswalkers.

My story is kinda like Llama's. Started in 1995 also due to it becoming very popular in my small town in Brazil. Some of my neighbors played and introduced me to it. I quite enjoyed my first worm as well. I remember always gushing over my friends Sengir Vamps and Autums Willow. In 99 I won the town championship with over 100 dudes of all ages. I was 13. Then I move tocthe US a little later that year and stopped playing because I didnt know anyone, let alone anyone that played. Slowly after some time I met a few kids but never consistenly until a couple of years back I found out one of my good friends played in high school and had his cards still like I did and we went back into it together

That's really cool :D Interesting how two people who are best friend each have the same hobby but neither ever figures out from the other until much later... I like hearing all of these responses as it really shows the "Origins" to all of us players who are also all planeswalkers :D also, do you have a dislike towards either, having played a while before the introduction of the concept?

Christmas of 2011. My friend said I should start the game because the world was ending in a year anyway. First pack I ever opened had a foil inferno Titan and that was really what got me hooked. This fricken foily maw of lava. I traded it for a crappy Reanimator deck many months later. I got into commanders about a year later and the year after I quit standard and modern until late last year when I picked modern up again. I love this game and will continue to play it for a while

I just realized that Today, of all days, the 1st of July, is my 20 year anniversary of playing magic...
Awesome!
I started in 2012-2013 because my brother played, although he had nobody to play with. I was a yugioh player back then(waiting for the negs lol), and I was interested in the game because I was shown it many years prior. I bought the 2013 exalted deck, and things just evolved from there.

I started around 2012-2013 I remember I had bought a pack when I was 9 or so that had nomads but can't remember the year. A buddy of mine played and I thought it looked neat so they built me a modern deck. I fumbled with it got into to standard, then commander, then out of standard, and then super competitively into modern :) and I love this game, by far the best game I've ever played(besides starfox 64, that .poo. was dope.)

I started when I was maybe 10? I think fourth or fifth grade, this was during ROE and it's just what all the kids at my school were doing. Dropped it for a while because it turned out to be a flavor of the month thing, but hey whatever. Ended up picking it back up January 2014 when my friends were talking about it in gym class (dimiroverlord and whatever Ryan's name on here is) have been playing since then :P

Cool how there are thousands of players with all different stories of how they started or got back into it

This is a long story, but here goes.

When I was 10 we moved to a small little village. I left behind a small pool friends. I was always a social outcast and moving into a tight knit community and being a homeschooler didn't help win me any friends. My neighbour, close to my age, was also homeschooled so we quickly became friends. He was my best friend, and my only friend. And he moved. I attended youth group and Sunday school faithfully, the one place you'd think someone could find some people to hang out with. No luck. I was a few years younger than most other people and had no interest in the immature people that were close to my age. In the end I tried to make friends with the older kids but they wanted no part in it. So I vowed to hang out with younger kids because I didn't want anyone to go through the same stuff as me. Fast forward a few years and I still have no friends my age but I'm hanging out with the neighbourhood kids. Nerf, LEGO, super smash bros. That's what we did. One of them got into Pokemon and after a few games with heavily modified rules I was hooked. My Aunt and uncle found out in passing and told me about Magic. Having a pretty large (still have it) Pokemon collection I was skeptical of investing in another TCG. I got Heroes vs Monsters for Christmas from my aunt and uncle, stopped playing Pokemon and got everyone I could playing magic. That was a bit over two years ago.
