I received a box of roughly 4000 cards from a buddy that had those 2 cards in it, and I put 2 and 2 together. I didn't know it had already been done.

Vintage has lots of fast mana, so cards that you'd think are too expensive for the format are actually plenty viable. The misconception probably stems from Legacy, since the lack of good fast mana makes expensive cards much harder to cast. Also, the lack of mana rocks makes Wasteland a very prevalent card, thereby restricting playable card costs even further.
