You probably want to fit into one of four categories: aggro, midrange, combo, or control.

Aggro is an aggressive deck, usually utilizing cheap creatures with some spell backup; many times these decks are red, but can also use white and black. A good place to start with an aggro deck is 20 lands, 28-32 creatures (usually from 1-4 converted mana cost), and 8-12 non-creature spells (examples include {Lightning Strike}, {Valorous Stance} and {Ultimate Price}).

Midrange is a deck that utilizes cheap interactive spells and bigger creatures in an attempt to disrupt your opponent and crush them with valuable creatures. A good place to start is 24 lands, 16-24 creatures (think 2-6 CMC, stuff like {Fleecemane Lion}, {Siege Rhino}, and {Wingmate Roc}) and 12-20 non-creature spells (think all-purpose stuff, {Utter End}, {Banishing Light}, {Murderous Cut}

Combo is a deck that attempts to pull off some kind of combination of cards that either wins the game or puts you so far ahead that it is nearly impossible to lose. An example would be using {Jeskai Ascendency}, mana dorks ({Sylvan Caryatid}, {Elvish Mystic}, {Rattleclaw Mystic}...), and draw spells ({Weave Fate}, {Anticipate}, {Treasure Cruise}...) to make ridiculously large creatures from Jeskai Ascendency triggers.

Control is a deck that attempts to control the game, usually through counterspells ({Dissolve}, {Dissipate}, {Silumgar's Scorn}...), removal spells ({Murderous Cut}, {Hero's Downfall}, {Banishing Light}, etc.), board wipes ({Crux of Fate}, {End Hostilities}) and a ridiculous "finisher" ({Elspeth, Sun's Champion}, {Silumgar, the Drifting Death}, {Ugin, the Spirit Dragon}).

If I were you, I would start with aggro, it is relatively easy to pilot and build, and it is practically universally good. Most times your opponent doesn't even matter, you just need to count to twenty damage. There are a lot of hidden subtleties and complexities, but starting out, the deck is kind of straight forward (and cheap!).

I could only expand on what Argos said from the perspective of a casual deck builder (kitchen table, having fun with friends). Look for cards that you think would be fun to play, and build around that. I built quite a few wanky tribal decks (around creature types) or even decks around a specific rare I liked.
It won't stand a chance in tournaments, but for casual tabletop play, it can be a great starting point.
For all the rest: Argus said it all, and I do agree that an aggro build would be the easiest to pull off.

Also a simple although I'm not sure what to classify it under is mono green which is simply getting creatures such as {elvish mystic} {llanovar elves} {sylvan caryatid} to make big creatures fast such as {terra stomper} etc
