Does he have to be declared as an attacker to get the attack bonus? Or can he get it via "put into play and attacking" effects such as {Alesha, Who Smiles at Death}

Whenever x attacks will only trigger when that creature is declared an attacker. Cheating it into play attacking will not be soon enough to trigger.
