Title: How hard is it to stop smoking?
Post by: Spencer Addington on March 11, 2015, 12:31:55 AM
ive been smoking for 5 months give or take and am toying with the idea of quitting. Are there any ex smokers who can recount the struggle of quitting?

I'm not an ex smoker but my brother is. He has yet to regret the decision. He has more money and more time. He feels better

Cigs depend on the person tbh
Just gotta stop buying packs, you can only bum so many cigs before you feel like a jerk

Stop smoking. Spend the money on magic cards.

My mother has "quit" twice. She's still smoking. But she can quit whenever she wants to. *rolls eyes*

People say it's stress relief and justify it by being social about it. But honestly everyone knows what they're doing. It's easier to quit now than later, cause later is two steps away from never.

Best advice I've seen is stay away from other smokers.

The longer you do it the harder it gets.

Addictions suck, I totally get it. I'm trying to overcome a self harm addiction right now and even though it's not a substance it's just as hard to break. If not harder, because sharp objects aren't exactly hard to come by x) I don't know if you are the same way as I am, but I want to quit until I hit that point where I start getting the urges....and then it's pretty much too late because I want the release it will bring  and I don't want help and I don't want to stop, because for a very brief period I feel really good....so yeah. My free therapy for the day, venting on an online forum xD I wish you luck, I'll be sending happy thoughts your way :3

Hey Spence, we can help you with this. If you need a distraction, just come wall game or chat with us. Just to take your mind off the craving.

Last couple of attempts I just stopped buying. In the middle of my new quit though. Stress made me fall of the wagon. Now it's harder, can't shut out the urge for now.
Distraction is good! Try to do something else.

Don't do this. If you're going to do something as challenging as quitting smoking it can't be "from then on" and "after this one time". When you decide you're going to quit, you stop then and there, no excuses, no half way theres, nothing. If you want to quit do it now and go cold turkey.

You still get carcinogens from weed (I say that loosely, because some studies have disagreed) but with the lack of thousands of harmful chemicals I would say it's better.

I need to quit smoking too Spence.I agree that saying things like "after this time" doesn't help you to quit. Cold turkey is the best way. I've quit cigarettes once doing it, and it's not too hard. Just focus on your goal and constantly remind yourself why you're quitting, even if that means putting a sticky note face level on both sides your bedroom door. You can do it bro.

I myself plan on getting a vape pen. I want to keep the nicotine and use herbal oils to help myself get healthier.

BTW: Lighting one up for ya Muggs. ;)

If you are inhaling smoke / burnt things there will be carcinogens. However, there are many ways to ingest marijuana without lighting anything on fire. You can cook with it, you can vape it, and you could also take the new thc pills.

It still may not be a healthy habit, but it's certainly safer than smoking cigarettes, especially if you mix your own juice.  If you make your own or buy from reliable places, you'll know that all that goes in to it are the glycerin, flavor and nicotine.  If you still need the nicotine, it's a much safer way to inhale it, plus there's the added benefit of being able to reduce the amount of Nic over time until you don't need it anymore.  I know several people who have switched to vaping and now don't require nicotine at all.  It's totally worth looking into if you don't feel like you can go cold turkey (or if you try that and it doesn't work out).

Vaping has been showing up more dangerous than cigs due to the glycerin burning at too high of a temperature so that it becomes carcinogenic. Like really bad. Most people have the atomizer (heating element) adjusted for higher heat so they can blow bigger clouds of vape. This is gonna kill people.

Just gotta smoke a lot o weed, like you won the lottery

Well, yeah, anything done dangerously is dangerous.  Just keep your temperature to what you need and you'll be fine.

It was hard for me. I went from 2 packs a day to cold turkey quit. I haven't fallen off the wagon, and it has been about 4.5 years. The cravings and desire haven't gone away.
Good for you for not giving in. Keep at it.

This sounds a little harsh, but you can't be weak, have the mental and physical toughness. It all comes down to that, it's really up to how hard you want it.🚬❌

Still smoking. I've been working crazy hours and it helps to have a smoke and relax. I'm not that interested in stopping yet.

I recommend going to your doctor and they can prescribe you some medication which helps quit. My parents did this and after about 2 months they stopped smoking completely

Both bad for ya, becomes a habit, relieves stress for some people... Both can be pretty expensive too. If you cut yourself bad enough that you have to get stitched up..

I have a perpetual fear of somebody finding my scars so I'm very careful not to go too deep. I also heard about somebody that went to deep and didn't get help in time...

This is all my personal experience. So others may differ.

Yes, it hurts. But it feels good. It's really hard to explain pain the feels good but that's what it is. I also felt like I was in control and like I was doing something about the things happening in my life at the time. Which sounds really stupid but that's what I was feeling.

Why did I start? I remember the day. Things happened between my parents and I, and I wanted to just sit in my room and process and be depressed. But we had people coming over in a few moments.  I don't know what thought process brought me to cutting but I felt like I needed to do something and I wasn't about to run away or commit suicide so I decided on cutting. It felt therapeutic.

I've mentioned this before but I stopped because I didn't feel it anymore, and I was too scared about where chasing that feeling would take me. I recently relapsed and kinda cut again. And I felt it. Depression is something that never truly leaves you. I like to think I've made it through but there are days where I fight against relapsing. There are days where I lose that fight.

I feel like I've high-jacked this thread and spilled my guts all over it, but depression and cutting are things society has very warped images about so I like to share my experience. If you have more questions feel free to ask.

^ thank you for this. So very much.

I started cutting because I feel like I need to hold all my emotions in to protect other people and its the only thing that feels like a temporary relief. My dad had just lost his job and everyone was so stressed, so I couldn't really dump all this stuff on everyone else. And one day I was having a really hard day, and I accidentally cut myself chopping vegetables, and the pain felt really really good, so I went off into my room and found a razor and went to town on my hips....that was almost a year ago. Now my hips are seriously so desensitized I can feel nothing. So I have to branch out to my hips and my thighs. And I have some pretty nasty scars that I'm really starting to regret....explaining why I have a suicide notep f sorts and other negative words carved all over my body is just SO much fun. And now I'm so addicted I take my razor everywhere and I go into the bathroom in places just so I can self harm....I feel so gross right now x) but it's good to talk about it I guess.

"I started cutting because I feel like I need to hold all my emotions in to protect other people and its the only thing that feels like a temporary relief."

^This^ except in all honesty I'm protecting myself. I had an episode where instead of fighting and walking away I broke down and cried. I told my parents I was depressed and they said "you're being selfish. You need to get over it." Later my mom said "you're not really depressed because you can have fun."

My parents don't trust me and I don't trust them with my problems because it never ends well from me.

If I can help in any way or you just need to talk let me know. Seriously.
