Will someone please explain to me how {Havengul Lich} works? Do you have to have the appropriately colored mana to recast a creature? Does it stay on the field? Help!

So paying activated coat on the Lich to let you cast a creature from your grave does mean you have to have the correct mana to cast that creature. So let's use {falkenwrath aristocrat} for example. So you have the 5 mana to pay the Lich and cast your vampire. Until the end of turn the Lich also has the ability to sacrifice a creature and gain indestructible. That help?

Yes. But it'd have to be a Grixis deck, because I'd need the {R}

For the example given yes it would be a grixis deck Also the creature does stay
