Title: Standard Control Options
Post by: Mattao19 on January 28, 2015, 02:38:36 AM
So in Standard there's really 3 options:

U/B Control (Most popular)
U/W Control (Basically just Jim Davis)

I like UW bc Elspeth but UB has sweet removal and idk what one I like better. So can we debate this?

Again standard here

Check my BUG list

Dominated UB control, abzan, Mardu and other random builds

It's too fun

I have run ub and it is good with frf.  Tried Esper before frf and it was not that consistent.  Tried bug control before frf and it was inconsistent might be better now though.  I top 8'd a pptq with ub control.

Tbh Esper is not good at all the mana base is SOOOOO BAD!!! Lol I tried it the first month of ktk and I didn't like it.

Muggy I love your BUG list but not really for me :P but good job on your success!

And Nohcus tbh I think I'm gunna run UB Control but Jim Davis has just had sooo much success with UW ... Plus Elspeth! :P

Only white worth running in Esper would be elspeth for the most part.  My only matches with ub I lost hard core were rug have a 50/50 match up against jeskai and rw aggro.

I play ub, it's really well positioned right now. I think it's pretty easily one of the best decks, if not the best, in the format

Idk how to defend UW Control when there's UB lol but for some reason (Jim Davis) I just wanna play UW lol

Yeah I wanted UW to be a thing but ub is just better

I agree with you bravado splashing might make sense, but probably won't get what you want when you need it is all anyone have good answers to rug hasty things.  Deck is a fast big clock.

So what's the thought on Monastary Siege? Good or bad in a control deck?

Amazing for getting through your deck

A 2 of, but none the less very effective at filtering your deck

Siege (to me) is a win more or lose harder card it's awful T4 to tap out for that and they go untap Stormbreath ... However T20 it's great lol so for me it's an absolute no

It's a 3 cost FYI.

And if they stormbreath, next turn your wipe (hostilities/ætherspouts/crux) will be up. You can take 4 damage. You can let a courser or brimaz or even sorin land.

UW would pretty much have a counter or a banish drop on t3, better to get something on the board to help you speed through your deck early IMO. Otherwise you wait until a counter can be supported with its drop (t6).

Plus it feeds your delve ;) also great vs burn

I have it as a 2 of in my UWr control decks. Just trying to get a feel for it.

Even at 3 it's useless if I ran siege and played it T3 and let Sorin resolve I have to 2 for 1 myself to get it gone (sure siege helps) but not enough IMO it's too Janky

Here's a real janky one. How about  {Cranial Archive}

Siege is not that great.  Good against burn and mirror not good against other decks that control needs to worry about.

{Cranial Archive} is so close to going into my SB .... (As a 1 of) but ya it's decent in the mirror lol

It is in my sb for mirror only.

I just feel that {Grindclock} is better tbh

Doesn't grindclock just fuel delve?

I've been playing 1 siege, and you never play it on 3. You play it when the board is clear, normally turn 6, holding up downfall or dissolve. It isn't the greatest, but it really helps against mardu, R/w, or any deck that has some sort of reach

Combined with ashiok

You will mill them if you can control their board

Doesn't matter if it fuels delve to me bc I only mill them once I've gained a commanding lead and have counters back up I know it's not ideal but control has yet to receive the AEtherling we deserve!!

Yeah clock is a real clock in the mirror

Pearl lake is good. Its not as overpowering as aetherling and with good reason: lack of low cost removal in current standard makes aetherling stupid powerful. So much more
Mana in this current format also as more midrange decks are present as opposed to RDW splashing white for double boros charm...
