Is {Nighthowlers} P/T in the GY 0/0 or X/X still?

He is just a 0/0. His power/toughness isn't a variable (a star ---> *; I.E. {Tarmagoyf}), it is a 0/0 in all areas other than the battlefiedl and stack. It gets +X/+X upon resolution, as opposed to a */* that just is.

47 seconds ;)
😕
Ok cool thanks guys +1s all around lol
What about {Nightmare}?

Fun side note
Due to the howler and mare's size being zip in the yard, smiley death lady (new red khan) can bring either back with her "less than power 2" ability ;)
Why do you think I'm asking ... Lol :D

Same
On the stack those stars are 0s
Once he hits the battlefield those stars are like "oh hey guys, swamps! I love swamps! I want to be all the swamps! You know what? Imma be equal to all the swamps this dude has!!"
Are you sure? Rule 604.3 states that a characteristic-defining ability, works in all zones. So he's only 0 if you don't control any swamps.
604.3. Some static abilities are characteristic-defining abilities. A characteristic-defining ability conveys information about an object's characteristics that would normally be found elsewhere on that object (such as in its mana cost, type line, or power/toughness box). Characteristic-defining abilities function in all zones. They also function outside the game.
Where's Remillo lol?

Oh snap
Rule #3 on gatherer for nightmare states that his P/T is always an active effect everywhere.
That horse is as big as all your swamps in play while he is in your deck as when he is in the grave or hand or play.
No smiley death mares... Sorry
Which is why I brought up the variable part for {Nighthowler}. Whenever a spell or ability asks for a definition of *, it is equal to whatever the variable is defined as, no matter the zone.
Ok so is this correct?
{Nighthowlers} P/T in the GY are 0/0
{Nightmares} P/T is X/X where X is #swamps I control? Say a 5/5 even in the GY?

Yes, the big difference here is the variable. (The star *)
Also if you notice, Nightmare says "P&T ARE equal to the number..." As opposed to {Nighthowler} saying "Gets +X/+X". Nightmare IS that big, Howler is given his stats after resolution.
Merci beaucoup!!
Just in case it's not clear enough (lol) this is from {Nighthowler}'s rulings
9/15/2013 Nighthowler's last ability functions only from the battlefield. In other zones, Nighthowler is a 0/0 enchantment creature.
I still don't know why, after 20 years, I'm still playing a game that makes me:
a) spend so much
b) read so much

Sorry to necro this thread but this is relevant to the thread. Could you select a {Sewer Nemesis} in the yard with her?

No player is chosen while nemesis is in the yard, so p/t would be zero.
