Title: Nightfall Predator
Post by: Rajess on April 16, 2012, 09:14:59 AM
My opponent uses nightfall predator (sorry, dont know how to link) to pick a fight with one of my creatures. My creature wins. Can my creature block during their combat phase? I assumed it could, as the predators ability is sorcery speed and therefore not being used in the combat step.

Depends when he used the fight ability bc technically it is an activated ability and therefore could be used instantaneously. So it wouldn't have to be before combat phase. If he did it before his combat phase, sure, you can use it to block because all they are doing is dealing damage to each other. If it is in combat, I believe it is something like provoke in which the two creatures can only face each other. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Yes he can block but his toughness is reduced by the damage done by {nightfall predator} since damage does not wear off til end of turn.

Curly brackets link to card names. You can find it on iPods by pressing the 123 button (to get to the symbols) then pressing the #+= button to get to the second page of symbols. The brackets will be where 3 and 4 are.

If he activated the ability before combat, your creature can still block. The term "fight" there just means they deal damage to each other. It doesn't mean they enter combat (if that makes sense). Keep in mind though that unless your creature had first strike or double strike it has 4 points of damage on it until the cleanup step at the very end of the turn. So if you want to block with it, its toughness is going to be 4 less than it normally is.

Edit: You're right Jester. Don't know why I said first strike or double strike would matter if it's the fight ability.

That is exactly what I thought. Except, of course, the ability of {nightfall predator} being used during the combat step.

Basically, I had {auriok survivors} equipped with two {sharpened pitchforks} and it was my only creature in play, she had {nightfall predator}, {immerwolf}, and {ulvenwald primordials}.

Fighting is not connected to combat in any way. Double strike, first strike, trample, flying have no impact on the fight ability. It's an activated ability and can be used whenever fast effects can be activated.

So, essentially, her {nightfall predator} dies, but my 6/8 {auriok survivors} become 6/4? Until end of turn, that is.

More or less.  They are still 6/8 with 5 damage marked on it ({Immerwolf} bonus).  The damage wears off at the end of turn.

This makes a difference for cards that care about toughness, like {Feed the Pack}.

As always, Jester, you are indispensable.

To be clear, he wanted to weaken your creature so that when he attacked you'd be afraid to block.

Yes, pretty much. A good play, considering I had one creature and no hand.
