Title: Commander - Riku confusion..
Post by: RDJDenley on November 29, 2014, 08:42:01 AM
So say I use Riku's ability to copy a creature.. Does this copy the resolved creature or the cast creature?

Fore example...

If I copy Clever Impersonator, do I choose two targets to copy or does Riku copy the card once it has resolved, meaning two copies of the same permanent?

Additionally, if I cast an X costing permanent I.e Savageborn Hydra, does Riku copy the casting cost  used for the hydra, or do I choose two separate casting costs? - presumably for this one, Riku will copy the Hydra once the cost has been decided?

Many thanks for any help!

ruling for 2nd question:
9/22/2011   If the creature had {X} in its mana cost, X must be 0. Note this is different from an {X} found in the mana cost of a copied spell.

So if a permanent with an X casting cost was copied, the copy will always have 0 for X?

yes. if its a instant or sorcery, however, the x will be copied:
9/22/2011   If the copied spell has {X} in its mana cost, the value of X is copied.

for reference: {riku of two reflections}

Found the following rulings:
22-9-2011   As the token is created, it checks the printed values of the creature it's copying, as well as any copy effects that have been applied to it.
22-9-2011   The copiable values of the token's characteristics are the same as the copiable values of the characteristics of the creature it's copying.

If I interpret this right it will not allow you to choose a new copy, but become a copy of the copied creature.
The ability triggers as the creature enters the battlefield, so you'll always copy a creature, and never the creature spell.
