Title: Back to building
Post by: Jlamb5 on November 26, 2014, 05:10:16 PM
Hey guys, I'm back to building another commander deck and have decided on building {on nixilis of the black oath}. I haven't played any mono colored EDH deck or even a two colored deck. Can someone help me with some mono black suggestions for this please.

I know I'll have a list of stuff for sure:

{phyrexian arena}
{rune scarred demon}
{underworld connections}
{erebos god of the dead}
The tutors
The rocks
{jet medallion}

Black has some really good board wipes. I recommend at at least a good 5 or more of them.

{Sheoldred, Whispering One} is a staple

I like {Dread}, and I like stuff like {Bloodgift Demon} and {Necropotence} are amazing, especially if you have lifelink. Some big vampires are good with that. Lots of demons have strong effects, too.

Already have demon on the list. Idk how I forgot sheoldred, or necropotence. I've honestly never sean dread. That's getting put in the list as well. For wipes:

{damnation}
{overwhelming forces}
{extinguish all hope}
{in garruks wake}
{decree of pain}

Any others that I'm missing. I'm also gonna play {visara the dreadful} and {avatar of woe}

I recommend {Black Sun's Zenith} since it can board wipe indestructible. {Life's Finale} is another favorite - the grave dump can be used either to badly hurt a player who lacks graveyard recursion, or you build an alliance with someone who has it. Or you can even use stuff that reanimates from any graveyard, and use it as a tutor from someone else's deck to revive for your own use :P

Another thought occurs to me.  Mono black means lots of swamps - {Nightmare} will finally live up to her name! {Korlash, Heir to the Blackblade} would be cool, too, even if grandeur is useless in commander.

Stuff like {Nighthowler} and {Mortivore} have real potential,  too.

On the {Nightmare} note, {Squelching Leeches}.

It basically gives all your creatures a delayed trigger version of "Whenever this creature deals damage, draw that many cards."

You're right.  That's embarrassing. {Abhorrent Overlord} should be there, too. And probably lands like {Cabal Coffers}, {Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx}, and{ Crypt of Agadeem}

I prefer dread, personally. No mercy can't punch someone in the face for 6 :P it's nice to have a huge, solid creature backing up the effect which isn't that great on its own. But if you just want the effect of killing what hits you, obviously no mercy costs less and is harder to remove.

Sorin Markov isn't that bad of an idea in a mono black deck because triple black isn't that hard to reach.

The harder to remove part is what I like about it. Plus if you're punching someone in the face for 6, they're more likely to try to remove it
