Title: Planeswalker Commanders
Post by: Agrus Kos, Enforcer of Truth on November 10, 2014, 03:09:22 PM
My playgroup is thinking of allowing all planeswalkers as commanders (there have also been hints that the EDH Council may allow it) so I wondered if you guys see any problems and/or planeswalkers that could be cool to build around.

I think too many would need to be banned. Jtms would be bonkers. {Liliana of the Veil} would be insane. Even {Liliana Vess} would be broken as your commander is vampiric tutor. Imagine {Sorin Markov}... Idk. Seems unhealthy for the format to me.

Jtms.
That was the one we talked about, but when you really think about it, which is more broken: {Zur the Enchanter}, or {Jace, the Mind Sculptor}?

Go Tibalt. Be that guy.

Sadly there aren't that many multicolored Planeswalker, so unless you want to go mono color, your options would be a bit limited. Vraska could make for a neat deck theme, though. You could also make a fun Izzet deck with Dack or Ral Zarek. Venser probably absurdly powerful as a commander, too.

Lol, as for Multicolor, all of the two colors have been made, and Nicol is the only tri.

Do all of the 2 color combos have a walker? I know most do, but I can't think of a Rakdos Planeswalker, for example.

Aha! Forgot brain-drained Sarkhan was black! Very good, then! God, that would be an awful card to use as your commander.

Well, actually... It could be a funny dragon tribal deck, just use him for his -4 and turn your commander into a dragonsplosion.

But Nicol is an 8 drop..

I've argued that Planeswalkers would be straight up bad as Commanders. There is virtually no chance they survive a full table rotation. And I've played {Jace, the Mind Sculptor} in many EDH decks, hes really not that good. Repeatable {brainstorm} is awesome in other formats, what do you do in EDH? Leave him with 3 counters and then what? Cool, you paid 4 mana for {Brainstorm}. And if you've successfully locked the board down, and your planeswalker can survive, it could have done that from your hand.

I understand the interest from EDHers based on how these cards perform in other formats, but {Consecrated Sphinx} is 5x the card JtMS is in this format. The only decent one would be {Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker} because you can use Grixis colors to build a cool deck.

Exactly, I just want to use {Jace, the Mind Sculptor} for awesomeness points, I know he's not OP or anything.

He'd be awesome in my Illusion Tribal deck...because it has a Jace theme. But I think there are better cards then {Brainstorm} in the format, and for 4-mana I'm not going to fateseal. That leaves {Boomerang}. I don't think so. There are better commanders then {Jace, the Mind Sculptor} and {Liliana of the Veil}.

I just feel that people unfamiliar with the format feel these cards are OP because OMG they get played in legacy and banned in standard. I disagree. JtMS got cut from one deck entirely because he kind of just sucked to put it simply.

Well it all depends; 1v1 commander, teams, FFA. If one can protect a PW to ultimate several times. A library exile would be rather nasty.

True, but there are worse things you could do in commander....Also, I'm talking about multiplayer, should have clarified; when I say commander I default to Multiplayer, French commander is 1v1.

EDH is a format that can be played by 2-infinite players. I think restricting yourself to different "french" rules when there are 2 players is silly. I will never acknowledge the existence of french rules lol

Yeah, but white doesn't generally have too much reach, so it might be what the color needs.
