Title: Surgical extraction question
Post by: ibtrickey on November 04, 2014, 01:34:38 AM
 Can I cast {Surgical Extraction} in response to a card such as one of these being milled into the graveyard:
{Emrakul, the Aeons Torn}
{Kozilek, Butcher of Truth}
{Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre}

Totally.  Those three (and the Lorwyn Elemental Incarnations) have a triggered ability that shuffles themselves (or the whole graveyard) in to the deck.  While that trigger is on the stack, you could Extract to exile them.  Just remember in the case of the Eldrazi, the rest of their graveyard will be shuffled in when the trigger resolves.

I just wanted to make sure that their shuffle ability used the stack :)

the difference is with a card like {blightsteel colossus} and the eldrazi is in the wording. the eldrazi say "when this hits the yard, shuffle in graveyard." the word "when" signifies a trigger. on blightsteel, however, the text "if BC would go to your graveyard for any reason, shuffle instead." this is a replacement effect, because of the word instead, and thus, BC will never touch the yard and you wont have a chance to {surgical extraction} him.
