I am new to commander. I was wondering how it works? What is the commander card in the game in reference to how you play? Ie: what are the basic rules for the game other than deck type?

If you look at the stickied threads at the top of this section, you'll be able to get a pretty solid grasp on what EDH/Commander really is.
The "Commander Format Deck Rules" sticky in particular is your first place to start. You may also want to check out the official commander site, www.mtgcommander.net
Deck rules sticky needs a ban list update, btw, if a mod would be so kind.
