why is the Wizards's Commander Banned List different from the one in http://mtgcommander.info?
If you know nothing, it seems pretty logical that you could
Visit http://magic.wizards.com, click to open nav menu
click Game Info
click Rules and Formats
click Formats
find Constructed > Commander
Scroll down.
(TLDR: http://magic.wizards.com/en/gameinfo/gameplay/formats/commander)
But some cards like Sylvan Primordial are found im the http://mtgcommander.net List (under Rules > Deck Construction) but not on the Wizards one...
(1) Why are these lists different?
(2) Why does iMTG use (seems to me) the one from Wizards and not the one from mtgcommander?
My friends keep telling me we should use the "official" one which they claim is found in mtgsalvation forums -- seems to me a bunch of people there take these matters very seriously but in my mind it still reads as the Game Publisher vs. Format Originators vs. Consensus Community... in which case i'd rather just go with the Publisher's list.
Now in the link I provided above, they do mention "To learn more about the format visit the official Commander website: http://www.mtgcommander.net" which looks to me like The Publishers exhibiting something like social media savviness by showing Deference towards the format's creators ... but with corporate ownership that could change at any moment... another argument against Wizard's list is that it's not up to date -- but as can be clearly read on their list, they added the Conspiracy type cards which would have made the games awkward or broken. this was Conspiracy expansion just a couple of months ago.
(3) So what's your take on all this?
(4) If you enjoy a Commander playgroup, what's their stance?
I think Sheldon Menery (the creator of the format and Judge Emeritis) wrote an article at one point explaining the differences. He also wrote that just recently Wizards started approaching him and the Commander Rules Committee about what Wizards can do to support the format the multiplayer commander format as a whole.
If you also noticed, there is also a different ban list for 1v1 (French) Commander. This is because cards that are broken in multiplayer are bonkers in 1v1. Also because 1v1 is a more competitive format.
Sheldon has stated many times that he wants Commander to be a casual, multiplayer format with social, gentlemanly interactions between the players, while it seems that Wizards and the creators of the French format want it to be competitive.
great point.
I'd favor finding common ground agreements between us in the playgroup over some strict observement of some particular banlist. I think this is the major grievance for me - that is to say, when you call X the "official" list and insist that we adhere to it, you're forcing me to play into the Blind Trust you're giving a third party ... which unless we're talking about the game publisher, I find overzealous and naïve.
Sheldon Menery, the father of the format, fully endorses playgroups deciding on their own lists. Whatever makes it fun for you, whether it's banning or unbanning cards, discuss it with your own group and make the changes you want. The Ban List is more of a Guideline to follow, and you'll be locked in to that list if you ever decide to play at, say, a Side Event pod at a Grand Prix.
great info! will try to spread the word.
@Taysby lol yaaay (sometimes it does feel like no one "gets it" doesn't it!)

My group tried to tell me yesterday that if you would begin your 5th turn you lose is a rule (to keep from turns that take forever) but I asked a judge and they said it wasn't. Score 1 for wizards rules' only!
only 5 turns to win? seems spikey.
