Title: Athreos vs. Magma Spray/Anger of the Gods
Post by: ChaosLayer on October 12, 2014, 11:01:22 AM
Does Athreos prevent the exile from Magma Spray and/or Anger of the Gods? The assumption is the target opponant does not pay 3 life when creature dies.

{athreos, god of passage} only will trigger when a creature you control actually dies, dies meaning moves from the battlefield to the graveyard specifically. {anger of the gods} prevents the creatures from going to the graveyard at all, so they never actually "die" or trigger anything associated with death. if creatures that have been dealt damage by {anger of the gods} would "die" they just go straight to exile. it creates what is known as a "replacement effect" because it uses the word instead. {athreos, god of passage} wont trigger at all, and your opponents will never get to pay life. same thing for {magma spray},
