Title: Arc lightning
Post by: Crossed on October 11, 2014, 11:54:25 PM
{arc lightning}. Can I target the same player twice so that I can split the damage to redirect to that player's planeswalker? I'm sure the answe is no, but it's worth asking anyway.

Nope. All damage or no damage dealt to a player from a single source must be redirected to a pw that player controls.

Could I get a ruling on that? I've never heard that before..

306.7. (http://imtgapp.com/forum/index.php?action=imtg;area=rule;number=306.7.): If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 614.9) and is subject to the normal rules for ordering replacement effects (see rule 616). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the damage as the redirection effect is applied.

Redirection means you cannot divide. I am not sure if you could target a player twice with this card though. That way it damages in separate units.

only if it had wording like {common bond}. for each instance of target, if it doesnt say another you could target the same thing. it would have to say something like "target player takes two damage. target player takes 3 damage." then one could hit walker and one player.

I've never used that myself but it seems worth knowing.

Makes sense. As {arc lightning} is a single source, even if you could target the player twice, you would have to redirect all of the damage from the source or none at all. Thanks guys.
