Why {the chain veil} because I preordered it!
Updated, removed my janky cards
Oh the chain veil why can't I use you in standard.
Had the chance to play it but opponent conceded....

Save for EDH and never trade away!
What is the advantage of using {Dissipate} over {Dissolve}?
I prefer to exile spells now in current meta
And I also have more dissipates than dissolves ;)
Usually negate is more effective for protecting walkers, but the dissolves/dissipates are for late game, usually end up holding a counter or removal late game and an extra ashiok, which is fine by me :)
Also; jeskai ascendancy gets RUINED by this deck, main boarding negates really stopped the jeskai decks
Also I should note: my gf piloting this build has been pretty efficient against my jeskai legends deck if I decide to at too aggressively.
May drop whip for another land
Also master of feasts has proven to be pretty neat, sometimes gives the opponent a card or two, but usually gets in free easy damage or strong PW protection, the removal and counters make it pretty easy to not be too worried about extra card advantage. Also ashiok's ultimate works well too
Took out master for prog sphinx
Master was a great beater no doubt, but for the GP I need something a little more versatile in defense.
Normally I am locking their board in defense, ashiok t3 has been essential at taking azban win cons away fast
It's a very patient deck, but is very persistent with constant answers
So this weekend at GP LA this deck did well for the first 6 rounds, the last 3, got flooded, made a few misplays & it resulted in losses and draws.
I realized I need another finisher. Prog sphinx was more defense based, so it became based upon what ashiok could exile away. This can be risky as sometimes they don't have creatures. Games end up going for 30 minutes or more in war of attrition...,
So in my 8th round (draw) I played UB control; he constantly chained {dig through time} and eventually pulled out the jank: {pearl lake ancient}
My mind was blown at how hard it was to kill...but the strategy played with it was truly the next aetherling for standard.
Was thinking about 25 land, but yesterday I lost some games just due to mana flood. Scry all of it to the bottom and still nothing but another scry land or pain land. With carytids, coursers and jace, filtering the deck isn't a problem for ramping. I can always mull if he or Garruk end up in my opening hand.
Alterations:
Main board:
- 1 drown in sorrow
- 1 sultai charm
+1 pearl lake ancient
+1 dissipate
Sideboard:
+2 sultai charm
+1 stain the mind (screw you siege rhino/roc/Polukranos)
-1 polymorphists jest (one is fine)
-1 murderous cut (downfall/charm/blight)
-1 unravel the æther (rarely used it, charm covers, keeping 1 for possible Keranos/xenagod)
Why all the one ofs an two ofs
Don't really need more than 1 of those cards?
Not even {dig through time}? Pretty sure you need More than one of those. This deck looks super inconsistent because of all the ones and twos
Works fine for me.
Added disdainful strokes - because more counters are good
Added villainous wealth for a win con
Took out reapers, just too slow at times, great walls and pushers, but the deathdealer a really handle defense and offense well and they don't cost "6" mana to play.
Took out pearl lake ancient - too slow for my deck, ends up being a dead card
I had tried æther spouts for MB x2, but id prefer lower curve counters for late game. 2 mana for answer to siege rhino and stoke the flames is a thing in my book
Replaced 2x disdainful with just one dissipate.
Added 2x horizon chimera
Removed 1x urborg
Why horizon chimera? I need life gain. I find myself being hurt with tap lands and thoughtseizes, then a few rhinos or lightning strikes and I'm dead. Courser of kruphix only gains life when you play a land, chimera can flash in EOT 3/4 & begin gaining you life consistently and also is a good flash blocker for mantis rider or chump for sarkhan. Plus it's offense as a flyer is nice consistent pecks. Gonna test with this build for a lil longer. I think the chimera has worked really well. Other options not so much.
Only other life gain options I have are:
Bow - expensive to cast, a little slow IMO
Whip - not enough creatures in deck and expensive to cast
Green instant - 5 or 10 life is nice, but so random.
???
Constant testing vs my jeskai legends build (USA tempo) and its pretty damn strong.
The horizon in for flash is wonderful; also, the synergy with jace ultimate is faboo. Villainous wealth is a fun card. Risky but very fun, I may get rid of it for another jace. Casting it with x for 4 is pretty successful vs jeskai.
23 land has been ok for the most part, I've only had one game I can recall recently with painful mana draw. I don't think ill be adding more and If I do, it'll be another yavimaya or temple of deciet. Having no problem with black mana at all. Sometimes the blue.
Keeping total of 6 counters mainboard. I'm usually stabilizing (even at 1 life vs burn) and holding off all threats while continuing to regain life/mana.
The PWs do the rest of the work for me.
As much as I miss the reaper, the horizon chimera has been far more beneficial.
Current build
Bile blight moved to SB
Removed hornets nest
Added disdainful stroke to SB
Sultai charm moved to MB
Giving empty the pits a shot this week, I've had games going with a large GY and villanous wealth is too slow at sorcery for me as I prefer leaving land open till end of turn ;)
{Empty the Pits} Has been a KILLER one of in my {Sidisi, Brood Tyrant} deck. I'm debating making it a two of, but I only ever really want to draw one. Highest I've done it for is x = 15. My only regret is the negative effect on my {Nighthowler}s. I don's see you having that problem but I do wonder if you'd ever really cast it for much? Let me know how it goes.
Cast it twice tonight, it's wonderful, I went on Dylan's suggestion
My chimeras kept me alive to win a game slowly when I was down to 4.
Ashiok has been dominating this week even with land mill. I've had several games where people just scoop at 20 life.
Love the deck think its pretty solid, temur Aggro is pretty strong against it though if I'm on the draw.
But the meta is 60% - 70% Abzan 25%-30% Jeskai, dealing with Aggro is the only issue, but that almost just becomes an issue on what you start with.
It's a real fun great deck :)
Really happy to see this. I have been working on making a deck like this but something just felt missing. I think i found it in your horizon chimeras though!
Seriously
Horizon chimera helps evasion attack and consistent life gain, and a body you can flash EoT

I for sure need to pick up a few.
Have you played against temur aggro? I went 2-1 last night at fnm with my lost being against that. I found with him going first a turn 3 knuckleblade would be really hard to remove.
Any suggestions?
My other games was
Mardu midrange which sideboard about a dozen cards and became aggro for second game 2-0
And abzan mindrange 2-0 last game i owe the chimera cause he got me from 1 health to 4 just in time for a seige rhino to drop me to 1 again.
Temur Aggro for me has been a nasty matchup, requires sideboard IMO, perhaps a hornet nest in the SB.
The knuckle blade is nasty for sure, I may also consider a {nullify} in SB, stops mantis and knuckle faster
Or even Mistcutters
Prot blue is hilarious

Was hoping for more after-the-fact removal but nullify is definitely going into my sideboard for now
The SB is still not solid yet as the meta changes a little bit in my area, so that's what I'm trying to figure out currently
Rug Aggro was definitely a tough matchup for me.
Nullify stops those stupid boon satyr drops also which is nice. Those can hurt really fast.
The new SB is solid
At a PPTQ this weekend, did well vs abzan, but I noticed my deck was really lacking a win condition for basic damage.
Hexproof creatures are very tough to deal with also. So...adding a mauler for that reason
Also Ashiok never showed up in any of my games, he is very much a solid card in my build that does become the appropriate threat it should be
Courser of kruphix - it's becoming apparent to me that it may not be for this build - I rely on mana open for instant answers. A t3 courswr usually is destroyed, or it begins to reveal your whole game plan. So going to drop the coursers this week.
Prog sphinx, wonderful with synergy, great wall but 5 mana makes it really expensive, I would rather have a sagu on the floor becoming a heavy threat
Adjustments:
-2 Deathdealer
-1 Negate
-3 Courser of Kruphix
-1 prog sphinx
+1 Thoughtseize
+1 Carytid
+2 Sagu Mauler
+1 Horizon Chimera (seriously my MVP)
+1 Mana confluence
+1 Ashiok
Hmm... I have to say cutting courser is ballsy beyond belief. It's the glue in my deck, without it my deck dies, fast. Not only does it set me advantageously against the decks weakest archetype (Aggro) it almost ensures a land drop every turn. A single courser from t3 to t8 has healed you 5. That's more than a whole Stormbreath swing, maybe buying you time. Even if it does flip things on top, things don't change. The Thoughtseize sets you up for knowing what removal goes where. So what if your opponent sees a downfall on top? It doesn't change that you're going to use it to kill something. I've found that in 99.99% of situations nothing changes. And the fact that by playing cards off the top Courser is essentially drawing you cards, which is vital in any control build. That + Kiora means 2-3 cards drawn a turn. But I'm interested to see how your build holds up without it :p
Yeah it's for this week mainly. I just found it ended not being what I want it to be. My t3 is ashiok, counter or charm, downfall. Preferably ashiok with a Carytid in front
For Aggro, I SB in ulcerate and nullify

Is {Ulcerate} really working for you? I've got four from drafting because I thought it might be good and it has sucked each time I've played it...Also, on the {Courser of Kruphix} note, with {Horizon Chimera} he's for sure going to get one life a turn plus his card draw spells get a bonus. I'd say the Chimera should cover the lack of Courser. Besides that I'm sick of the "If green Courser, Poly K and Caryatid." rule.
So tonight the mauler did great
Strangely I was drawing both near eachother
I took out the confluence and kept 2 negates
Much better choice
I liked the 4x of seize/Carytid/ashiok
At one point I drew three ashiok's in a row after being flooded with mana which lost me a match, but otherwise everything was solid
Ulcerate is keeping Aggro board clear, makes it a solid SB for me. Sure 3 life, but being able to remove a t1 or t2 swifty is worth it
Have you found anything for temur aggro? I am still having trouble with it. Kunckleblade is OP
Well heros downfall works well after you thoughtseize their ramp won
Sideboard in nullify for sure!
Knuckleblade is cake compared to sagu mauler, just make sure your opponents tap out
I also used a jace t3 to bounce one back after I thoughtseized another. I recommend having a t1 seize for this deck always. Seeing your opponents plan is so key, you can disable them or see they took a horrible land hand and slow down their whole game progress by killing ramp and other key items.
First of all: sagu mauler T4 = scoop.
This guy is the hulk I've been missing to protect my board and usually sagu comes out early enough to decimate anything on the board.
Haven't seen too many wipes in my meta, but sagu has been a great add that adds to scoop factor.
Going to try it without chimeras and with coursers instead for this week. The new format will have much more Aggro & abzan midrange is slowing down as a dominant deck in my area.
Added Garruks Wake and dropped an ashiok due to courser in the mix now. Need a late game wipe, and I do not want to wipe my own creatures. I may have to start trying extinguish all hope. I just don't like the idea of destroying my guys at all, especially if they have a courser who is buffed up.
Fate reforged adjustments
Considering adding monastery siege to MB with fate reforge release, the card draw or 5 mana heroes downfall is just amazing. It stacks also...so double either effect or have both. I would only run 2 max
Drown in sorrow will be MB'd most likely for FRF

Are you going to add Crux of Fate?
Thinking about it. The wiping of my creatures isnt my favorite part but 5 mana wipe is much better than 9 mana wipe.
The hardest part will be cuts.
Depends on what else we get for BUG, hopefully we get surprised, we still have time for amazing cards. Ugin might be the choice for the garruks wake/Garruk slot, would prefer more solid land ramp. But that's why I'm trying courser again.
So 3 coursers and sagu were what was missing from this deck long ago, good bye janky horizon chimera: you will be missed.
Kiora and courser synergy is just too good.
Went 3-0-1 For cash standard split first. We played it out for fun. Mana screw and ashiok is a bad combo for opponents.
Full control works so well, people get frustrated with this deck as I keep their board clear. Games to extend to 20-25 minutes, but if its how I win G1, it's how I win.
Garruks wake decimated an abzan board with elspeth @ 6, 10 tokens, 2 coursers and siege rhino that I let land.
Player was not stoked.
FRF
Monastery Siege
Blue exile spell
Crux of fate
These two cards are the only additions so far, ugin is very tempting over Garruk
Going to remove ætherspouts, despise and silence from SB for the week and try out 4x death dealers for control matches
Any other bug players thoughts on new cards coming out?
I also play BUG control, and well.
Blue exile spell.
Can I play more then four?
Seems like the best card for control in standard

Like seriously, what are R&D doing with the blue cards in the khans block.
