I found my old magic cards, and decided to buy a new deck as well. After attending pax east to check out some video games, I happened upon a wizards of the coast panel and decided I wanted to start playing again. It's been ages, so does anyone have any recommendations for getting back into it? I am in a new city and don't really have any friends yet, any online suggestions or avenues that you've used that are successful? Thanks!
If u dnt have ppl to play with face to face, i would go to youtube and look up cockatrice and download that you have all the cards ever made and theres some really good players on there u could learn from.
You could check out the nearest card shop and ask current players for help. I do suggest not to trade anything until you can trust people. You don't want to get a bad end of a trade. I try to stop trades that are bad for new comers and older players trying to get back in the game. The most popular formats are: Standard, Modern, and Legacy.
Maybe look for a place to play FNM.
Before you start trading away any of your old cards, check the prices. You might be surprised.
some of the rules have changed. Planeswalkers are a new card type, blocking is a little different, no mana burn. If you buy a premade deck, like an Event Deck (which I'd recommend), review the simple rule book to see the new stuff.
Welcome back! :D
Yes learn the prices before you trade. I just got back in a year or so ago after a 10 year highateous as well and traded a ton of good cards like {gaea's cradle}, {vindicate}, {pernicious deed}, {bribery}, {Mox diamond}....just to name some.....for less than half of their bottom dollar value cuz I was eager to get some of the new cards.
Thank you guys so much for the help and input...the community is much of the reason that I've been longing for a return :)
I've been out for a long time too. Just now getting back in. Comic book/card shops usually have Friday night magic.
I've found that this app, imtg is a good place to trade. People are fare, and you can look up the card values, so you know you're not getting taken advantage of.
Welcome back! There are ton of new cards!
I can't believe how many cards I've missed! I just found out about this Friday night magic. It requires me leaving the house...so it may kill two birds with one stone! Haha

Haha nice!
I'd start by looking at the cards in the most recent set and gradually work backwards. Otherwise, you'll never catch up.
Oh! And definitely check out the banned and restricted list on wotc.com
Yeah I got 4 decks from Pax, and sitting in the panel I realized that I have missed so much haha. And apparently return to ravnica is highly anticipated. I'd never even heard of it! I checked out the banned list and decided to build a deck with new cards to be safe. That's another subject all together...deck building. Hah. I was lucky to buy enough cards to build a deck when I was 11. Now I'm 29 and realizing that I can in fact build a deck if I want to haha!
And check out some of the new mechanics:
Level up cards
Landfall
Morbid
and of course the new miracle.
👌
I highly suggest goin to the Avacyn Restored prerelease at your local shop on the 28th. I just got back into the game after six years of a hiatus an decided to start at the Dark Ascension prerelease. It helped me get accustomed to everything in just one night an because it is a sealed tournament, people were a lot more helpful with deck building and tips and more patient with my lack of knowledge.

Nope lol there is no more mana burn and damage does not go on the stack anymore! When i found out i had to call a judge to make sure.
I think {mindslayer} may have attributed to the no mana burn ruling....but IDK only guessing.

Combat damage doesn't use the stack. 😜
I found a Friday night magic at a local comic shop, I'm going to stop by tonight and see what I can learn without looking like the oldest, nerdiest girl ever! Maybe even make some new friends in a new city :)
I did the same. Played 6-9 edition then took a break. I've gotten into it again.
I went to fnm drafts at a local shop I found on wizards website.
Cockatrice and this app keeps me from buying many packs at once.
Like any hobbie, either need to get naturally good at it, or spend lots of money :/
