Oh, they knew. Multiple of the Theros Gods come from real mythologies. Heliod is derived from the Sun God Helios, as another example. I'm sure that if you looked, you would find a lot of connections to various pantheons and mythos.

Oh I know, especially in the early days. Look at pre-4th edition  {Unholy Strength} and pre-revised  {Demonic Tutor}... I just thought Wizards had moved on from blatantly "demonic" ideas... Well, this one really isn't that blatant lol
